What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Remember the "One Laptop Per Child" project, that developed a low-cost computer for children in developing countries? I was always amazed by a certain feature: The "View Source" button.

When you pressed it, the source code for the currently running application would open. This was supposed to encourage tinkering with the software on your device! <3

I've been pondering what it would take to build that button on modern machines. Has anyone seen something like that?

(Prototype in next toot.)

A white-and-green laptop with funny antennae, that looks a mix of a toy/handheld console and a small laptop.Screenshot of the "View source" feature. A window showing Python source files has opened.

Bringing up my quarterly complaint that there isn’t a service that all news services use for micro-payments so I don’t have to subscribe to 100 news sources.

I’d love to give you money to read an article, but I’m not subscribing for one article.

RE: vis.social/@infobeautiful/1160

Risk vs risk perception except in this case it's what shapes risk perception. There's a reason the principals at my former employer generally did not talk to the NYT when called. They had plenty of stories about talking to the NYT to find their quotes taken out of context to support a predefined narrative detached from reality.

I'm not sure we'd be worse off without the NYT (and WaPo while we're at it). Wordle and the crossword puzzle would live on, good investigative journalism would move on as it has been doing for decades, and chumps like Ross Douthat and Bret Stephens might have to find a real job (just kidding: those types always find another far-right sugar daddy to prop them up; grifters gonna grift). Dumping the opinion and editor class at the NYT and WaPo would be the biggest win.

Remind me again why we lament the state of US journalism.

The EU will soon adopt its 20th sanctions package against Russia.

But the previous 19 haven’t changed one basic fact: Russia still imports hundreds of foreign-made components — including those manufactured by European companies — to mass-produce drones that are terrorizing Ukrainian cities.

Heute vor 6 Jahren ermordete ein Rechtsextremer neun Menschen in Hanau. Das war kein Einzelfall. Die Radikalisierung des Täters im Netz auch nicht. Noch immer fluten Rechtsextreme Social Media mit rassistischen Inhalten. Wir müssen das ernst nehmen und handeln – bevor Gewaltfantasien wieder Wirklichkeit werden.

Apple sitting out the AI race has given its stock price an essential feature; stability.

Tech stocks are experiencing wild swings as investors can’t decide if AI will kill SAAS businesses or big tech is overspending on AI.

Meanwhile Apple isn’t in any of these conversations as they’ve just focused on selling phones.

"국가가 제도로서 사람을 죽여도 되는가"를 고민의 대상에 올릴 수 없다면 대체 사람으로서 뭘 고찰할 수 있겠는가? 사형 사형 하니까 머리 속에 관념화된 일벌백계의 이미지만 공허하게 맴도는 건가? 사형은 살인이다. 사람을 죽인다. 이데올로기 상의 개념이 아니란 말이다.

Today’s fun English suffix is “-age”, a very flexible nounifier.

“-age” can be stuck on a verb to mean “the thing that is verbed”. Luggage, coverage, appendage, wreckage.

It can be stuck on a verb to mean “the place where verb happens”. Storage, carriage, anchorage.

It can be stuck on an adjective or even another noun to abstract the word’s core concept. Shortage, postage, percentage, roughage, leverage.

It can go on a concrete noun to refer to the noun’s quality collectively. Peerage, sewerage (all the pipes), footage (length of film), mileage.

Then there are words which look like they might have an “-age” suffix but it’s just a coincidence. Sausage, message, advantage.
