Yeah, I've made mistakes. Real ones. I own that.

What I also own: 8 years of open fediverse work, fully open sourcing Loops, and doing the hard work of making things right with people I hurt.

I'm embarrassed by who I was then. I'm proud of who I'm becoming.

I'm still here. Still building. Still learning.

It's worth keeping in mind that Loops is made by dansup which has also made and runs Pixelfed, FediDB, and has a history of being hostile to developers.
You can see the recounting of his hostility at https://dansup-open-letter...
(I'm not a signature of the open letter)

This comes up here and there to discredit the developer but having followed all the drama for many years now I just want to add that Dansup has apologized multiple times, and has been far more open about his process. His communication has also changed for the better over the last two years especially. Its not easy being human, and I think its a good sign to see that he takes this seriously.

How to go block-less with the WordPress ActivityPub plugin

Frank Goossens' blog @frank@blog.futtta.be

Being the web performance zealot I am, I strive to having as little JavaScript on my sites as possible. JavaScript after all has to be downloaded and has to be executed, so extra JS will always have a performance impact even when in the best of circumstances it exceptionally does not impact Core Web Vitals (which are a snapshot of the bigger performance and sustainability picture). Hence when adding blocks in WordPress, I check if the block is entirely rendered server-side and if not I look […]

Gemini

@eyeintheskyThe Eye

I think a problem is more that instead of "ActivityPub has JSON-LD" you might also say that AP delegates to.. or even 'handwaves' to linked data.

is linked data --> ✅ Extensibility mechanism DONE"

Which is either..

- By far not the case, if you consider the promise and power of ActivityPub

- May perhaps be true, if you have a very particular notion on what the fediverse is and isn't.

That last bit remained unspoken, so what AP vs. fediverse is, is really in the eye of the beholder. There exists no shared (technology) vision. discuss.coding.social/t/major-

With the extensibility mechanism unclear, there is no clear separation either to what is protocol and what is solution space, and there's continuous confusion around this.

I replied to @evanEvan Prodromou yesterday, as his remark would entail that all post-facto interoperability introduced on-the-fly by app impls would have to be honored now in the standards. What standards process does that give?

social.coop/@smallcircles/1161

@smallcircles🫧 socialcoding.. It's even crazier than that. I saw the thread a few days ago where @cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber apologized for JSON-LD in AP and @evanEvan Prodromou defended it (but for backwards-compat, not because AP is linked data). The "extensibility" claim is technical gaslighting since that's only true if you use JSON-LD processing of AP data (practically no one does and there's no requirement to do it). 🤪 Even then it's a weak form of protocol extensibility.
