I saw a post recently that was arguing that you should stop using alcohol wipes when giving yourself hrt injections because it's too wasteful, literally saying that the possibility of sepsis is worth not using a square inch of cotton per week.
They weren't arguing for more efficient solutions, ways of recycling the material, or anything like that. It was just "you should facetank risk of infection in order to not create waste"
And goddamn isn't that everything I've been noticing lately about how people talk about technology and progress and waste these days; a kind of reactionary tech-pessimism.
I recently had a student argue that we should never have invested in NASA or the space program because rocketry can also be used for weapons, damn all the other things that came out of it like weather satellites.
Westerners literally make up stories about the Fukushima Daiichi plant, talking about people who are walking-dead cleaning up the site since they'd already had a lethal level of radiation exposure. Sorry, what's that? No one died from radiation exposure when Fukushima Daiichi failed? That doesn't feel right.
The power grid! My god, the power grid. Everyone is so hung up on "what if we ban datacenters" but, guys, the US power grid has been decaying from austerity and intentional conservative sabotage for decades. Remember when rotted infrastructure caused wildfires a few years ago in California? The primer driver of your power bills is that, not facilities still under construction. We have to fight and build solar and improve transmission between states so we can actually send that electricity places!
Like we can't embrace our own "reject modernity". We just can't. The answer can't be "stop using air conditioning", "stop using electricity", "stop using satellites", "stop using alcohol wipes".

대략 앞으로 1주일 가량 기온은 서서히 올라갈 것으로 예상됩니다. 통상 평균기온이 5℃ 이상, 10~15℃ 내외로 올라갈때 개화가 시작되는데요. 통상 2월 1일부터 일일 최고기온을 더해서 약 600℃에 달하면 벚꽃 개화가 시작한다고 알려져 있습니다. 소위 600의 법칙이라 불리는데요. 현재 부산 지역의 경우 3월 9일까지 합계 수치가 442℃입니다. (부산 기준) 기상청의 주간 예상 기온 수치를 모조리 더해보면 대략 3월 21일부터 벚꽃이 개화할 것이라고 어림할 수 있습니다. 기상청의 예측과 크게 다르지 않은 수치네요.
고기압이 본격적으로 상륙하는 오늘은 전국 대부분이 맑다가, 고기압이 빠져나가는 내일부터는 서해안 지역은 구름 많거나 흐리고, 동해안 지역에는 모레 동풍 강수가 발생할 수 있겠습니다. 오늘 아침 최저기온은 -4~4℃, 낮 최고기온은 6~13℃로 평년보다 낮습니다. 이 기온 상황은 저기압이 조금씩 밀려나면서 티벳 고원 인근의 행성파가 본격적으로 영향을 주는 12일 경부터 회복될 것으로 전망됩니다. 주요 도시별로는 서울 -1~9℃, 대전 -2~11℃, 대구 -1~12℃, 광주 -2~12℃, 부산 2~12℃, 제주 4~10℃입니다.
거기다 AO(북극진동)가 급격히 반등하고 있는 것이 각종 관측 자료에서 보이는데요. 현재 500hPa 티벳 고원쪽을 보면 기압능이 크게 북쪽으로 밀려올라가는, 일종의 릿지가 보입니다. 이 능선이 이동하면 동아시아 트라프가 약화되고 점차 온난한 공기가 유입되는데요. 북극진동의 변화와 합해지며 기온이 회복되겠습니다. 하지만 베링 해 블로킹 세력이 어디가는건 아니라 급작스러운 회복보다는 며칠 포근하다가 며칠 춥다가 다시 며칠 회복되는 날씨가 예상됩니다. 전형적인 봄철 환절기 날씨죠. 이럴때일수록 더욱 건강 관리에 유의를 당부드립니다.
500/850hPa를 보면 캄차카 인근에 머물러 있던 저기압역이 여전히 베링해 인근의 강한 블로킹에 막혀있긴 하지만 살짝 동진한 것이 관측됩니다. 그 빈자리에 이동성 고기압이 밀고 들어온 셈이죠. 이 이동이 조금씩 이어지면서 상층 기압골이 해소되고 이동성 고기압이 한반도 중앙으로 위치하게 되는데요. 이러면 바람의 흐름이 수직 하강 기류로 바뀌게 됩니다. 오늘 밤~내일 아침 까지는 오늘 유입된 미세먼지와 거기에 더해진 대기 침강으로 인해 미세먼지 농도가 상당히 높아지겠지만 내일 오후부터는 빠르게 대기질이 개선될 수 있겠습니다.
26/3/10 날씨 이것저것 아침 출근길 참 추우셨죠? 북풍이 불어오고 있습니다. 위성사진을 보면 제주도에는 특유의 카르만 와류가 형성된 것이 보입니다. 하지만 대기 질은 좋지 않습니다. 미세먼지와 PM 2.5가 전국 대부분에서 나쁨 상태를 기록하고 있는데요. 통상적으로 추울때는 만주쪽에 위치한 고기압으로 인해 대기가 청정해지는게 국룰(?)인데, 이번 고기압은 서해상까지 남하했기 때문에 진행양상이 달라집니다. 고기압 가장자리 순환이 미세먼지 유입 통로를 만들어버린 셈이죠. 그래서 춥고 먼지도 많은, 괴로운 아침이 되어버렸습니다.

Ten years ago it was widely assumed that our military was effectively unstoppable in a hot war. Now the entire world knows that it's not. We don't have sufficient missile defenses to protect our facilities. Our elections can be manipulated. Our leaders are avaricious dupes. We can be pwned.
It's a massive change. The idiots in D.C. destroyed not only America's soft power, but its hard power as well. When this is over, a country with only 5% of the world's population may have only 5% of the world's influence. You can decide whether that's sad or glorious; I believe it's sad, because for all our faults we've done more good than harm, but ymmv. Anyway, it's the truth.
The American Century is over. The French villagers who feted my father-in-law and his fellow soldiers from the 79th when they retraced their WW2 path by bus with their families in the 1960s would tell you that's not entirely good. But the country we've let ourselves become no longer deserves that adoration. For the world's sake, I pray someone else steps up.
