Please share: I'm currently looking for an artist to create some illustrations for Keila. I'm looking for a cute, minimal style of vector illustrations. Not looking for AI-generated stuff 🙏

Attached picture is an example of the style I'm looking for.

(And just to be clear, I'm willing to pay; I'm not looking for free illustrations.)

This is great for looking for human-made art for their book covers. It's a big challenge commissioning artists for book covers where (most) authors are on a tight budget. These budget constraints often lead authors to "go low" when contracting. A lot (but certainly not all) low-bidders are scammers using AI. I have even been presented premium-priced bids from so-called artists pushing AI-gen book covers and book illustrations.

Also, I love the "licensable" column, because my publishing co requires all rights.

I am not a big fan of Apple. Yes, I have been using some of their products for many years now, but I'm trying to shift to alternatives whenever possible. But not everything they do is bad. One of the things I really appreciated was the introduction of ATT, the App Tracking Transparency. This means when you install a new app on your iPhone and start it for the first time, it will ask for consent for tracking. If the user denies, tracking is not allowed.

I believe this is a legit and important functionality. Unfortunately, the German media and advertising industry does not share this view and has approached the Federal Cartel office.Apple has proposed a compromise that has been rejected by five assiciations. They are calling on the Federal Cartel Office to prohibit the current ATT tracking query and impose a fine.

They argue in the lines of that Apple allows tracking for their own apps without asking permission. (Which sadly is true)

I am afraid ATT will be watered down, but hey, why not moving to more secure and privacy friendly alternative like GrapheneOS? When it comes to privacy, I do not want to depend on third parties to determine how much privacy they want to grant me.

What is this "sort-of fail2ban?" I talked about in my last post, you may ask. Simple...

I wanted some sort of syslog aggregation but found the popular software packages way too big and complicated (plus in one certain case: cumbersome to configure and poorly documented). Settled on a central syslogd instead.

Having the central syslog was nice, but "grep" was insufficient for more structured searches, so I wrote a small tool to feed it all into a PostgreSQL-DB and a small command line client for querying the DB without having to write a full SQL query every time.

"Hm, when I feed it into the DB I could already extract the interesting parts and have a small and fast index for those?!". Done.

Having that I now can do two things:

1) A single SELECT gets me an accumulated list of bad actor IPs that I can feed into "pf" periodically.

2) A VIEW and another single SELECT gets me an RSS feed of things I like to know about.

These two things were not planned at all when I started with the log aggregation, yet turned out to be incredibly handy.

The whole project has only about 900 lines of code (mostly Perl, some SQL, a tiny bit of Go).

Which selfmade tools do you have?

For those pondering upgrading, it may be worth taking a peek at my "You Have Installed OpenBSD. Now For The Daily Tasks." nxdomain.no/~peter/openbsd_ins -- I'll be incrementing the version numbers once OpenBSD 7.9 is out :)

Hey everyone,

@casey and @rania40“a Gazan student” aya had the honour of speaking to two families from Gaza today and we’d like to welcome them to Gaza Verified.

Everything you never wanted to know about visually-hidden. @dbDavid Bushell ☕ digs into the two-decade history of the visually-hidden CSS pattern, examining whether just position: absolute and clip-path: circle(0) suffice in 2026. The article explains why the platform still lacks a native alternative and why standardizing the hack might encourage misuse rather than address underlying design problems.

dbushell.com/2026/02/20/visual

“Everything you never wanted to know about visually-hidden” title and four CSS snippets: .visually-hidden with 11 properties, and three minimal alternatives with 2–3 properties each.
