What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Here goes Doctorow again, in that way of his:

"I suspect that the people who oversee the design of modern news sites don't care about the news at all. They don't read the news, they don't consume the news. They hate the news. They view the news as a necessary evil within a wider gambit to deploy adware, malware, pop-ups, and auto-play video."

@PaulaticsSenator Paula Simons🇨🇦 If it were about kids, there would be a push to get media literacy in schools. Age verification is dangerous to everyone, its implementation is only a variety of privacy violations. When kids were getting into their father’s or uncle’s porn magazines, no one was searching homes looking for these stashes to protect the children. Kids will be curious, so also make good sex ed mandatory in schools. @jdp23Jon @Em0nM4stodonEm :official_verified: @effElectronic Frontier Foundation

same as substance abuse, same as homelessness - its not about helping anyone its about making the problem less visible so it doesn't seem like there's a problem. See, problem gone, it must be solved right?

On the plus side, age verification will make our kids a LOT more tech saavy trying to get around it, spoof it or fake it. Not to mention a cottage industry of of-age ppl farming their IDs out so kids can post on Tik-tok or whatever.

“Does this scale? — No! Neither does friendship.”

“How do you ask a friend to follow? Idk, text them. Or just ask them in person. You’re friends, right?”

Four days at MWC Barcelona. The show has exceeded all our expectations.

Two weeks ago we were in hackdays. This week we showed devices at world premiere with new software arriving from our Tampere team every single morning, flashed fresh each day.

The full story is in this fortnight's community newsletter. Worth a read. 👇

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this. Keep sailing. ⛵

I've been thinking about adding federation health monitoring to —not as a separate data store or custom API, but by extending the existing integration. The idea is to expose delivery outcomes, signature verification failures, and per-remote-host error rates as OpenTelemetry metrics alongside the spans Fedify already emits. If you already have a Prometheus or Grafana setup, you'd get federation observability basically for free. Circuit breaker behavior (temporarily skipping a remote server that's been consistently unreachable) could surface as OpenTelemetry events, keeping everything in the same trace context rather than scattered across separate logs.

Does this sound useful to you? I'm curious whether people building on Fedify—or running federated servers in general—would actually reach for this, and what kinds of things you'd most want to observe. Happy to hear any thoughts.

@lmorchardLes Orchard wrote something that stuck with me: AI-assisted coding isn't creating a split among developers. It's revealing one that was always there, just invisible when we all worked the same way.

If you're mourning the loss of the craft itself—the texture of writing code, the satisfaction of an elegant solution—that's real, and no amount of “just adapt” addresses it. You might need to find that satisfaction somewhere else, or accept that work is going to feel different. Frankly, we've been lucky there's been a livelihood in craft up to now.

Hello users. If you enjoy exploring the Fediverse via the web, you might find this I created helpful. It lets you interact with almost any post more easily. It also works, of course, on Firefox derivates.

Feel free to take a look.

things that never happened and then the printer stood up and clapped too? because writing a kernel extension that bypasses Apple’s system integrity protection and driver kits requirements in a single prompt isn't a productivity hack it’s a miracle equivalent of Jesus walking on water 😂

It is a screenshot of a tweet from user called "anish" (Twitter/X @faradayfury fake verified/paid bluecheckmark) from March 10. The post explains how his dad bought a new MacBook Air but was upset that his 20-yo HP LaserJet printer was incompatible. Anish asked the AI Claude for help, which "literally re-wrote the driver software" for the new macOS, successfully making the printer work
