For human beings, different domains regularly have different amounts of expectation that you'll conform, and nuance to what degree you're expected to demonstrate that conformity. This isn't necessarily a bad thing (many established and community-cherished traditions are like this). But it does create different innovation patterns.

A thing I've been getting curious about lately. What do we think about the pressure, or expectation, to CONFORM in technical communities?

Maybe sit with it for a second before you answer. Because my read on this is that it's actually more complex than we think. A lot of technical communities and areas tout their innovation constantly but if you look at their social patterns? Seem pretty closed to new ideas to me.

Looking at the class action lawsuit by academic peer reviewers claiming publishers constitute an illegal cartel that is misappropriating funding to their research, I am wondering whether professionals could mount a similar action against ISO et al for diverting payment for their work exclusively to standards publishing.

There are couple tags I use to organize my toots.
- about books I read (lv, en).
- about video games I play (mostly indie) or shotgun (lv, en).
- best moments from my DnD guild (lv).
is my small, but growing collection of cases when a really angry, hateful game review makes me think that I totally should try it, and I end up loving it (en, reviews mostly from GOG).
Hashtags for craft adventures TBA.
