At a site used as a test for deep-sea mining in the 1970s, “the tracks of the 100-tonne machine that was sent down to the seabed are still visible…the impact of mining on some of the wildlife is ongoing."

Even more sobering is that by removing the nodules, which take millions of years to form, the very slow ecosystem recovery will be to a very different state than what was there before.

A signal of our thoughtlessness that could last until the ocean floor is subducted.

YouTubeで卵と砂糖と豆乳かきまぜてレンチンするだけのプリン製作動画みてたら「これならおれでも作れる」てなってやってみた。我が家には砂糖が無いのでてん菜糖を使う。材料攪拌５分、裏ごし器通して器に移してレンチン４分弱。冷ました後数匙すくって食ってみたら思ったよりおいしい。ほなカラメルも！と思って、水・てん菜糖をぐつぐつ鍋でやって、追加の熱湯をぶっかけた。ちょっと茶色になったからそのままプリンにかけたら、なぜかべっこう飴を載せたプリンになってしもた。うーむ。カラメル失敗。砂糖じゃないとだめかね。

Am I the only person, who on seeing a date, is not able to effortlessly calculate what day of the week that is?

I find it very tedious to see some event I'm interested in, being advertised on some date. I have to turn to my calendar to discover, ah, in fact, that won't work because I have some other recurring commitment on that day of the week.

Event organisers: How hard is it to include the day of the week when you publish a date?

Remember you're writing once. Hopefully you'll have many readers. Don't offload cognitive work onto all of your readers that you could have avoided by being a tiny bit more thoughtful.

Proof or Bluff? Evaluating LLMs on 2025 USA Math Olympiad

Recent math benchmarks for large language models (LLMs) such as MathArena indicate that state-of-the-art reasoning models achieve impressive performance on mathematical competitions like AIME, with the leading model, o3-mini, achieving scores comparable to top human competitors. However, these benchmarks evaluate models solely based on final numerical answers, neglecting rigorous reasoning and proof generation which are essential for real-world mathematical tasks. To address this, we introduce the first comprehensive evaluation of full-solution reasoning for challenging mathematical problems. Using expert human annotators, we evaluated several state-of-the-art reasoning models on the six problems from the 2025 USAMO within hours of their release. Our results reveal that all tested models struggled significantly, achieving less than 5% on average. Through detailed analysis of reasoning traces, we identify the most common failure modes and find several unwanted artifacts arising from the optimization strategies employed during model training. Overall, our results suggest that current LLMs are inadequate for rigorous mathematical reasoning tasks, highlighting the need for substantial improvements in reasoning and proof generation capabilities.

Just before more advice comes in - no I don't drink fizzy pop, we have no car so I ride and walk and take public transport everywhere, and we cook almost all of our meals from scratch with fresh ingredients.

I have kids and I actually *want* more energy to run around with them, I'd like to get back into swing dancing again, you can't go jogging when your blood sugar is already below 70 mg/dL.

I'm so bored of having to convince people that I didn't choose this.

Sara's sugar sagas: I mean, I try not to eat sugar. Chocolates around Christmas and ice cream in summer are hard to ignore, of course. After a long OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test) I was clearly v. hangry and jittery and was heading into hypoglycemia, so I now officially have Postprandial Hypoglycemia (basically a pretty solid regular sugar crash). I am to go to a nutritionist, there was talk again of the weight loss injections (do not want, they apparently can cause more hypoglycemia) 1/?
