for the past few years, i'm sure many of you have read my many lamentations about the death of the old, small web many of us grew up with.
there are tons of static site generators out there, but none of them did what i wanted: something that could build an entire site without futzing with javascript and library dependencies. i wanted something that we would have had in 2005, but didn't have in 2025.
in january, i decided to do something about it instead of whining. i started gluing together a few php scripts i had been using to build blogs, rss feeds and mini homepages. i even wrote a new mini markup language.
i thought it would take me a week. it took >3 months. 😅
it ran for the past month as globaltalk.network's interactive site, and many of you asked if i'd ever let other people spin up an instance. i can finally say: yes!
today, kiki is officially finished and released for public use. named after my little black house demon, it's small, fast, and sometimes well behaved. and, it's all written in php without a single external dependency. just unzip and go.
it's released as shareware - in the oldest, finest, jankiest meaning of the word: you're free to goof around with and share the unregistered version. build your own little kiki instance, and customize the heck out of it until it feels like your own little home in the world wide web:

I haven't been able to stop thinking about this woman:
She’s one of the agents who arrested Tufts grad student Rumeysa Öztürk last month.
The raid was headed by ICE, but it’s unclear what agency this woman works for.
If you watch the video, this female agent comes in the second wave.
The first agent to make contact with Öztürk is a man who bumps her, as if by accident, and then grabs her phone out of her hands.
It’s clear that, initially, Öztürk thinks she’s being mugged.
But then another man comes in behind her.
She is quickly surrounded and they begin to pull off her backpack.
Eventually they handcuff her and lead her to an unmarked vehicle.
If this happened in Oaxaca, you’d assume it was a cartel kidnapping.
But that woman . . .
She’s wearing a mask to hide her identity.
She does not appear to be wearing a badge.
She seems to be making direct verbal and visual contact with Öztürk shortly before the student is led away.
What agency does this woman work for?
Was this sort of enforcement action a new experience for her?
Öztürk committed no crime and was in the country legally up until the moment the secretary of state personally revoked her visa
—but he did so without informing Öztürk.
She had no way of knowing that her legal status had changed.
The government made a change to target her, without her knowledge, and then had her arrested.
Is that the kind of job this agent signed up for?
Does she think that it is proper for the government to create conditions to change an individual’s legal status without informing them?
Does she think it is morally acceptable to accost a law-abiding person on the street?
Does she think Öztürk needed to be handcuffed?

I've been using AI to help me organize tasks and it has been TREMENDOUSLY helpful.
I did a huge mental dump a few weeks ago and have gotten through a ton more tasks than expected, or maybe I simply don't give myself credit when I complete tasks and have only focused on the active/incomplete.
Yesterday I solidified a foundational schedule for basic human needs/adulting/work/leisure time, so now I'm moving on to adding in specific chores for an at-home and away from home schedule. That will be completed by the end of the weekend.
Tonight I'm focusing on adding all the brain stuff I wrote down that, as I'm learning, overwhelms my mind, but isn't all that urgent so long as I have a central place to store it.
For that I purchased three spiral notebooks a week or so ago. One is for work, one is for person and one is for "content-creation" and/or hobbies.
I feel SO relieved. AI can be useful, if used correctly.
