What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

XDrz

Random reminder that is the reason why AstraZeneca vaccine is patent-encumbered:
wired.com/story/opinion-the-wo

> Gates bragged about convincing Oxford University not to open-license its vaccine. Gates leveraged his $750 million donation to the university for vaccine research—even though its vaccine was developed in a publicly funded lab. Eventually, Oxford sold the sole right of production to AstraZeneca, with no guarantee of low prices and an extraordinary opportunity for profit.

I've always wanted someone to write a type-safe framework for tensor manipulation that
a) fully leverages first-class types, and
b) is ergonomic

Maybe that someone has to be me; I wrote a proof-of-concept in Idris and used it to implement transformers:
github.com/bgavran/TypeSafe_Te

It supports standard tensors, and *non-cubical* tensors given by applicative functors, as well tensor indexing.

So if you have a 't : Tensor [BinTree, BinTree] Double' and you index outside of the shape of the tree, you get a *compile-time* error.

Indexing is powered by containers, transposition by Naperian functors, and non-cubical tensors by applicative functors (see cs.ox.ac.uk/people/jeremy.gibb)

I was surprised how far one can go with this idea, and how pleasant it was in general to implement all of this in Idris.

What all of this does is enable you to implement the *generalised transformers* as described here (glaive-research.org/2025/02/11) - transformers that operate on not just vectors, but potentially trees, and other structures too.

A non-obvious thing I've learned about Wasm in browsers is that a hypothetical future DOM API interop feature might not be built on top of JS interop.

DOM APIs are defined in WebIDL, which has a lot of type information. For example, a WebIDL `dictionary` has a fixed set of fields. In source languages which have `struct` types, a `dictionary` might be best passed as a `struct`, rather than going through the JS representation of a `dictionary`.

`externref`, custom descriptors, js-string-builtins, etc. can help code that's aware it's talking to JS, but won't necessarily be the best tools for code that wants to talk to browsers.

3 THINGS I'm grateful for when it comes to the :

1: I (almost) never see any AI slop. I'm subscribed to @404mediaco404 Media and I'm constantly horrified by their articles on AI slop - so common on Meta platforms. Not here. So .

2: I'm never force-fed content by people I don't follow – so common in other places where algorithms rule. My time & attention are treated with RESPECT.

3: People here protect the privacy of children / don't post their pics. Consent is BIG.

Checking out tax docs, and it looks like revenue has a news section.

This is actually not worth 10 mil. It's worth zero because you seized it. Coulda collected tax on it, but nah we're not doing that.

Headline in revenue.ie news section : "Revenue seize herbal cannabis worth €10 million in Clare"

astral-sh/ty looks cool, but I can't figure out how to configure or use it.

Is it just me or has anyone else figured it out?

I can run `ty check` but it seems to not see any install libraries and I'm missing something non-obvious.

This day 30 years ago, a new employee at Netscape named Brendan Eich was hard at work creating a web scripting language called Mocha. It would soon be re-named JavaScript, in a dubious attempt to co-brand it with another new web programming language from May 1995, Java. cybercultural.com/p/1995-the-b

p.s. according to @allenwbAllen Wirfs-Brock and Eich: "There is no known record of the specific dates but Brendan Eich believes it was May 6–15." zenodo.org/records/3707008#.X6
