What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Rather than being resigned to a story of "company as a future adversary", we can utilize the framework of steward-ownership to reify our vision for "company as a future commons".

This is how Weird inc. / Roomy corp. (same thing, different brands) will work as a company; pro-social by design.

Really enjoyed David Gerard's amusing take on how programming with AI becomes like a gambling addiction for many.

"Large language models work the same way as a carnival psychic. Chatbots look smart by the Barnum Effect — which is where you read what’s actually a generic statement about people and you take it as being personally about you. The only intelligence there is yours."

"With ChatGPT, Sam Altman hit upon a way to use the Hook Model with a text generator. The unreliability and hallucinations themselves are the hook — the intermittent reward, to keep the user running prompts and hoping they’ll get a win this time."

"This is why you see previously normal techies start evangelising AI coding on LinkedIn or Hacker News like they saw a glimpse of God and they’ll keep paying for the chatbot tokens until they can just see a glimpse of Him again. And you have to as well. This is why they act like they joined a cult. Send ’em a copy of this post."

On the limits of LLMs (Large Language models) and LRMs (Large Reasoning Models). The TL;DR: "Our findings reveal fundamental limitations in current models: despite sophisticated self-reflection mechanisms, these models fail to develop generalizable reasoning capabilities beyond certain complexity thresholds." Meaning: accuracy collapse.

Interesting paper from Apple. ml-site.cdn-apple.com/papers/t

• We question the current evaluation paradigm of LRMs on established math benchmarks and
design a controlled experimental testbed by leveraging algorithmic puzzle environments that enable
controllable experimentation with respect to problem complexity.
• We show that state-of-the-art LRMs (e.g., o3-mini, DeepSeek-R1, Claude-3.7-Sonnet-Thinking)
still fail to develop generalizable problem-solving capabilities, with accuracy ultimately collapsing
to zero beyond certain complexities across different environments.
• We find that there exists a scaling limit in the LRMs’ reasoning effort with respect to problem
complexity, evidenced by the counterintuitive decreasing trend in the thinking tokens after a
complexity point.
• We question the current evaluation paradigm based on final accuracy and extend our evaluation
to intermediate solutions of thinking traces with the help of deterministic puzzle simulators. Our
analysis reveals that as problem complexity increases, correct solutions systematically emerge at
later positions in thinking compared to incorrect ones, providing quantitative insights into the
self-correction mechanisms within LRMs.
• We uncover surprising limitations in LRMs’ ability to perform exact computation, including their
failure to benefit from explicit algorithms and their inconsistent reasoning across puzzle types.

An update to C2S authentication mechanism in FEP-ae97:

https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/pulls/618/files

Signing requests with a DID is easy, but it doesn't work for access control, because for that we need to know the exact actor (same-origin policy can't be used for access control because proxyUrl ActivityPub endpoint allows making requests with server's authority).
Therefore we need to add a verification method to the actor object, but it is important to use plain ap URIs for its id. If a client controls a key with the server's origin, it can impersonate other actors on that server (in origin-based security model).

fep-ae97-client was updated to sign requests with actor's key.
