Lessons learned when using #bhyve in general and -k configfile: everyone hates whitespace at the end of a line and so does bhyve; to successfully configure PCI and LPC devices you have to follow the man pages to the letter; bhyve(8) slightly deviates from bhyve_config(5) it seems; contents of man pages may change, depending on the #freebsd version (surprise!); I’m probably not experienced enough to understand why there is a difference between “normal” PCI devices and LPC devices and why this is reflected in the config syntax and there are very good reasons why (if I remember correctly when I had a look) #vmbhyve chose to use bhyve command line options rather than -k configfile in their source code; the man pages do not always make clear that some bhyve features are experimental (and not compiled in) and reading the FreeBSD handbook is always worthwhile; my system was not unusable due to active ZFS deduplication during my experiments; bhyve appeared to excel in terms of performance, I did not expect that my VM runs so smoothly on a 15+ year old laptop (SSD upgrade only), didn’t try Windows yet though. And after all this I’m still not sure why I’m supposed to bhyvectl —destroy my VMs, like does that free up some resources somewhere? I did note that this makes the device node of the VM in /dev/vmm disappear though.

I’m installing a Windows 7 VM using #bhyve and GEOM Gate at the moment. This is quite impressive (not the Windows part). I don’t have a CD drive in my bhyve machine, but my laptop has. So I put that Win7 CD into my laptop, SSH-remoteforwarded GEOM gate’s default port 3080 and told bhyve that /dev/ggate0 is a CD drive. And it just works, no questions asked, no complaints, super easy. GEOM Gate seems to exist for ages, just discovered it, never heard about it before.

Latest #robot in sea trials. An old 12v trolling motor provides propulsion. A #RaspberryPi pico is always-on and runs the basics, sensors, h-bridges and such.
An RPi4 will be the main autonomy hub to enable detailed mapping and surveys and such. But for now I can just push #mqtt buttons in #HomeAssistant and move it around.
I built it almost totally out of scrap and epoxy. What a delightful waste of time! 😜

I'm looking at the Astro tutorial— two minor questions—
- Do I understand correctly I'm allowed to eschew .astro files completely and specify everything via JSX?
- It says you can "integrate your favorite framework", and lists React, Vue, Preact, "Svete" and "Solid". I like Preact, I like React, and I know I'm not interested in Vue. Is it worth it to find out what "Svete" and "Solid" are?
- Can Astro be run in a "no framework" mode (IE: JSX becomes HTML on server side, no JS on client side)?
