Something to chew on, this Pride month:

As a cis and/or hetero person, you don't have to understand how it feels to be gay, pan, or ace, to be trans, enby, genderfluid or any other identity or orientation. You don't need to intellectually "get" it. It doesn't have to make sense to you.

There's nothing more to it than taking people's word for how they feel, and standing alongside them, as they simply live their lives as themselves.

Much love :BetterPrideHeart:

Unsure if this one will make it to 39C3
It needs to have someone be with it 24/7 for the duration, make sure it eats, drinks water, doesn't hurt itself, hugging it and petting it when it needs that, etc, since the event is very stressful for this one

And it doesn't have anyone like that anymore. If this one does not find anyone like that till 39C3 it is canceling its plans of attending. Last time it went without a caretaker - at 38C3 - it felt really horrible, nyaa...

Thanks to incredible community work, Ghostty now builds and runs on FreeBSD and an official FreeBSD port is in development: github.com/ghostty-org/ghostty Its still not an officially supported Ghostty target since we don't have it running in CI and we have no BSD maintainers, presently. But its a step in that direction and a showcase of some great community work.

I've been doing some soul searching lately. Sort of a side effect is I'm not on social media much anymore, that includes any of the big ones (even Bluesky). There's lots on my mind but I just haven't been feeling the need to share. Cue memes of people documenting every moment of their lives with a cellphone and insert here

Some days I wonder what it's really for. Nobody I know IRL is on Mastodon, so I only get to see non-personal posts from strangers typically about US politics or other matters I can't do anything about aside from the occasional boost. Being civically engaged I see in my mind as writing letters to your representative or organizing and attending protests. To be fair there is some really good analysis in the Fediverse which is interesting to read, but not actionable.

If I want to say something I feel it would fit better as a blog post somewhere more private (i.e. not federated). I've always liked the idea of the indi-web or the smol [sic] web. I may end up retreating to something more retro like a blog. In fact I started writing in GeminiSpace with an alias.

I often wonder about the long term viability of creating posts on the Fediverse. It's easier to maintain and backup and update things when it's just flat static files in some directories on the computer. For this reason and others I don't know if it's worth it anymore.

US Politics, abortion, Le Guin

As her daughters, our words here, our voices, our very bodies would not be if our mother had not had the support and the courage to stand up for her own body and mind and heart, and for the possibilities of ours.

Hmm so

I previously replaced the square gate in my arcade stick with an octagon gate

I'm now realizing I play mostly Tetris and Literal Pac-Man, so I should probably replace the octagon gate with a square gate

However

The square gate is not installable at a 45 degree angle, and

It turns out the stick is a Hori Hayabusa, and it doesn't appear anyone *makes* aftermarket diamond gates for Hayabusasa 🤔

I wonder if it's time to finally stop using this PS4 fightstick :(

A baby begins crying on a plane, held by its mother.

A nearby woman leans over, smiles at the mother, then fusses over the baby, trying to distract it.

Vs

A nearby man looks at the mother with a pained expression, and says "can you, uh, do something about that?"

A gender essentialist would take these examples and say "see? Women have an inbuilt nurturing instinct, whereas men are if anything hostile towards infants. Mars, Venus, evolutionary biology, QED."

But. The reason that both passengers felt the need to act is exactly the same-- whether you're male, female, or anything else, the sound of a crying infant is a distressing one. It registers instinctively in your brain as a problem that needs to be fixed.

It's just that women tend to be socialised to think it's their job to do so.

And men also tend to be socialized to think it's women's job to do so.

Dinosaur fights seem impressive but they're just a bunch of matrix multiplications.

We can model dinsosaur fights from the AD&D Monster Manual (1e, of course) as a Markov chain that you run until they hit one of two clusters of final states: one where one has zero hit points, or the other.

The matrices were pretty fiddly to get right but I got there in the end in Mathematica.

I compared the results to two completely independent methods (Monte Carlo simulations in C++ and an experimental Python DSL, all agreed to as many decimal places as you might expect.) so I think I can now reveal the dinosaur league table...
