Still Switzerland, almost Italy: in Ticino, at my mom's apartment. Qui si parla italiano!

I usually am a fast reader, but I'm taking my time with this one. Distilling my pleasure, as it where.

@xandraalexandra "Letter from the editor" is a moving love letter to the Web that was, is and will be.

@sachajudd cover article "The web we lost was here all along" is a beautiful trip down memory lane. I still remember that coffee pot!

I forgot about fanzines, but certainly is one! โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ

Good Internet Magazine next to some of my mom's balcony flowers.

Good Internet gets some well deserved rest at the seaside in Italy. Or is it the other way around and the magazine gives me some well deserved rest? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

@sarajwSara Joy :happy_pepper: "Can accessibility be whimsical?" hits a theme close to my heart with lots of consideration towards the fun personal websites should still give their authors while trying to be inclusive. A difficult but satisfying challenge!

@xandraalexandra

The Internet is international. The Web is short for World Wide Web. It is perhaps only fitting that this Summer I bring Good Internet issue 1 with me on a mini-european tour...

Let's begin its journey this morning in my hometown of Fribourg, in Switzerland. Other photos will follow in the comments.

@geerlingguyJeff Geerling Disclaimer: new to Raspberry Pi/Linux. I have a Raspberry Pi 5 running Pi-hole and I use btop to view stats. btop on the pi is v 1.2.13, but the most recent release is v1.4.4 (github.com/aristocratos/btop/r) how do I update? I don't have any available updates when I type sudo apt update (and I'm not sure if this would also update btop if an update was available - if if it's just for the system OS). Teach me Obi-Wan, you're my only hope ;)

The Trump administration is set to incinerate nearly 500 tonnes of emergency food, enough to feed 1.5 million children for a week. Despite repeated requests from USAID staff to distribute the food, which was intended for children in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the new political leaders of USAID, under the direction of DOGE, have not approved its shipment.

Human factors matter a lot in our craft. And we have very little data to talk about it, and a whole lot of folk beliefs. Which to be clear I also think is fine, but because Compiter we feel like there must be a Correct answer here. So we search for one even if it may not be able to be found

For example, I have a long-standing personal belief that dynamic typing proponents believe it makes them more productive because they feel like they get to a โ€œworkingโ€ state faster, but then spend more time going from 80% working to 100% working. Is that true? Fuck if I actually know!

0

The โ€œhumans estimate their time incorrectlyโ€ is very interesting regardless of AI, even! Take static vs dynamic types, for example. Self reported productivity on this is all over the map! But is that accurate, or do we perceive different parts of the development process differently?

I deeply appreciate the way the authors were very clear about โ€œthis is what weโ€™re sayingโ€ and โ€œthis is not what weโ€™re saying,โ€ as it feels like theyโ€™re actually searching for truth and not just looking to publish anything in a hot space for the sake of it.

So, to try and counteract that tendency, I view this paper as being very good because it can actually help answer those questions! If they do it or similar again with new models, this is an important point in the data, the โ€œbeforeโ€ result that would help inform that aspect of this space

One thing I think Iโ€™ve come to as Iโ€™ve considered AI/LLMs more seriously is that reinforcing your own biases is very very easy. A lot of the discourse is taking some conclusion, applying it to the story, and then reinforcing that confusion by taking it as evidence that youโ€™re right

๐Ÿด Geez, the battery in this thing sure doesn't last as long as it used to
๐Ÿน My friend, what you're observing there is called "Planned Obsolescence," one of many ways in which capitalism grinds us all down. Writing to your elected official won't solve the problem because your elected officials are PART of the problem; the only long-term solution is a radical restructuring of society from the ground up
๐Ÿด so... like, are the replacement batteries from eBay any good, or

Getting to do some code, which doesn't happen as often these days since becoming Executive Director (something I knew was likely to be true when I took the position).

But criminy, it feels good to code. Especially on Spritely's codebase! Which is just a dream to hack on.
