Back from the summer, 2.5.12 is now ready for production usage.
And this includes the post-quantum cryptography encryption () support which is the main feature of the 2.5 series. (Okay, there is also better support for 64bit Windows.)

So give it a spin or point your favourite GNU/Linux distribution to it for packaging.

A long, interesting study on how IA is reshaping how user search on the web. People still mostly rely on Google to search, out of habit. But AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini are starting to change that, especially when they help users skip long research tasks. AI isn’t replacing search, but it’s slowly becoming part of how people look for information.

How AI Is Changing Search Behaviors (17min) By Kate Moran, Maria Rosala and Josh Brown at NN/G. nngroup.com/articles/ai-changi

OK, preaching to the choir here, but…

Our brains and bodies are simply not wired to handle the 24/7 horrors going on in the world right now.

I am not going to judge you based on how much you do or don’t talk about current events here.

Because I do know that the folks I follow here - they care, even if they’re not talking about it.

So if you’re feeling guilty/awkward/whatever about posting a good thing, or what you had for dinner, or something you made - please, don’t.

We need good stuff.

It's that time of year again, @ThePSFPython Software Foundation Board Elections! If you're a voting member, please take the time to read the nomination statements and vote.

I sometimes endorse specific people, but I think this year, no. The Board can do with experience, or with new blood. Great candidates! Make your own choice!

Except DO NOT vote for Franz Király. Even ignoring his bad faith arguing and bad ideas, he's clearly not a team player and does not act in Python's best interests.

It's the @ThePSFPython Software Foundation election opening day.

I personally vote for as many candidates as there are seats open, and I'm prioritising board continuity – @jezdezJannis Leidel and @simonSimon Willison have both been vital to the board, and we're going through a phase where we need their expertise and institutional knowledge.

Otherwise, my focus is on increasing diversity and international representation. For my vote, that'll be Abigail Dogbe and Sheena O'Connell, who both have experience working with the PSF and a track record.

Here is a first proof-of-concept demonstration of an actual outcome for the erdosproblems/OEIS linkage project. There are a number of Erdos problems relating to irrationality of specific series. I asked an AI to compute several of these series to several decimal places (chatgpt.com/share/68b7160a-3d4), then entered in these decimal strings into the OEIS search bar. I found several hits, which I then uploaded to the project github.com/teorth/erdosproblem .

In particular, I linked Erdos problem 259 erdosproblems.com/259 to OEIS A371134 oeis.org/A371134. In the latter page, there was a reference to a solution to the problem by Chen and Ruzsa doi.org/10.1023/A:1004742930674 that was not known to the erdosproblems.com site. So now we can mark that problem as solved!

I think this type of semi-automated literature search could be a good use case for AI tooling, since the (potentially unreliable) output of such AI tools is only used to locate more reliable human-generated resources, rather than being directly incorporated into the final product.
