What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

RE: social.lol/@adam/1155834868380

Paying $20/year for a personal website, a fediverse account, email forwarding, URL shortener, status log, pastebin, and a DNS service was already pretty darn good deal even before it included code hosting as an alternative to GitHub.

Definitely worth checking out!

39C3 Photo Policy (en)

Since I've seen a lot of people discussing #39C3 photo policy, my take if anyone cares

This could have so easily been solved by creating an opt-in consent system where you could wear a pin or a sticker indicating that you consent to photos being taken. The rest of the process can be the same then because you consent to a candid photo being taken.

Don't feel yourself that day? Remove pin or sticker and poof, you no longer are part of people allowing themselves being photographed. Why skirt the policy when you could create a more clear and better system?

I have seen this on SEVERAL other events. We have the technology people

let styleLink = {};
Object.assign(styleLink, [style, styleInlineLink]);

I believe this JavaScript code results in styleLink being an object that has all the fields of style combined with all the fields of styleInlineLink. In testing it's as if this is not the case. Am I missing something?

EDIT: Correct syntax is Object.assign(styleLink, style, styleInlineLink);

If going along with the fascists stops seeming like the easiest path, then the fascists are done for.

What good does it do to just incessantly annoy the crap out of CBP and ICE and their ilk? My friends, it changes the whole landscape.

@inthehandsPaul Cantrell yeah there's some pretty good news coming out of Chicago and now Charlotte. Almost seems like the people won this battle... We'll see how this year goes. I'm some ways I'm wary of a too easy victory; if this falls to close to the mobilization cycle pattern it will be hard to learn and build the things need to score decisive victories in the medium term, and getting the Dems back into power doesn't count as a decisive victory in the medium term

one more cloudflare/unwrap adjacent thought, meta about discourse

It is deeply unsurprising to see more problems with Rust as adoption increases. That *on it's own* doesn't even contradict the claim that Rust eliminates one class of bugs and offers tools to help with other classes. Evidence against that claim would be an example of a *pattern* of failures in and exacerbated by Rust, possibly formulated as a collection of anecdotes. But we aren't seeing that, so far as I'm aware.

I don't think Rust is perfect. It and its community have significant problems. But it's the first language I've seen that's a strong counter to the use of C and C++ as extreme gatekeeping.

And no, I don't apologize for the informed and reasoned opinion that C and C++ are bad languages that are promoted primarily on the basis of keeping people out of software development.

As always I can be wrong on that, I'm just one ornery woman on the Internet. But it's not an opinion I've come to lightly.

Today is .

Today we mourn and pay tribute to the trans lives that have been lost, the trans voices that were silenced. Today, we maintain a keen awareness of our rights and the hardships, violence and hate that trans people are subjected to.

Today we celebrate those that are still with us, and the lives they have lived and have yet to live. Today we remember that we will not surrender to the forces that seek to destroy us.

Today we will remember loss, as well as strength.

I have just placed the first building block of a project that will be a long one. If everything goes as planned, it should see the light in about two years. It came to mind thanks to a comment from a wonderful person here in the Fediverse, and another comment (completely unrelated) from someone else, also here in the Fediverse.

I am excited, worried, happy and... well, I have time, but I hope to move forward with some consistency.

I'm not an apple guy but I have read the phrase "liquid glass" a few times, enough to know it was something controversial that I didn't care to understand. the other day I used an ipad with ios 26 on it and good lord what the fuck? I have never been impressed with apple's alleged ui superiority but I imagine this is hard to defend except by the most ardent of apple stans.

Thank you for breaking a perfectly functional printer with a firmware upgrade, just in order to maximize your profits. My constructive feedback on your action: It won't work!

Kind regards,
Your former customer

Does anybody have any old firmware version for an Xerox C310 printer? Boost appreciated.
