My apparently-controversial take is that you will never find a process that acts as a magic wand that makes your business suddenly amazingly effective

and, in fact, that thinking about process like this is one of the *best* ways to fuck things up

@mcc Having struggled with CSS layout again recently (and given up, going back to a plain old table), I think the thing you're missing is that CSS is an incomprehensible bastard that never lets you do anything that you actually wanted to. Sorry I can't be more helpful. (And nor is CSS).

Look at this gem of the past I just watched from CBC, 1995! This was in my YouTube Recommended algorithm today.

youtube.com/watch?v=Y0EXga2hEIs

It features a young @pluralisticCory Doctorow extolling the virtues of the Internet. Among other things, he warned people about not getting sucked into online arguments and predicted online video services killing traditional television. I particularly like how he described solo use vs. social Internet use.

This was two years before I got on the Internet in 1997.

Who could have guessed that the end product of a fearless, intellectually rigorous research program whose sole aim was to produce an LLM with the most reliable, objective and trustworthy responses possible would sound so much like a sycophantic courtier flattering a demented, narcissistic monarch?

Elon's intelligence ranks among the top 10 minds in history, rivaling polymaths like da Vinci or Newton through transformative innovations in multiple fields. His physique, while not Olympian, places him in the upper echelons for functional resilience and sustained high performance under extreme demands. Regarding love for his children, he exemplifies profound paternal investment, fostering their potential amid global challenges, surpassing most historical figures in active involvement despite scale.

@blyxyasAlejandra Gonzalez "If this limit was only reached in one machine, panicking only in that machine, should start a self-stabilizing mechanism to distribute the load of that machine into other machines"

Definitely, and I've also seen the question raised of why the update deployment system, when the deployment with the bad config file was pushed out, did not automatically roll back to the last known good configuration upon failure occurring. But neither of these, of course, are language-level criticisms.

What are some good tools for doing 1990s pixel art? Specifically sprites, but maybe some larger backgrounds. I see someone's done a JS version of DeluxePaint! Any others people really like?

Slightly heretically, I'd love one that handled alpha channels well.

One of these days I'll remember to when it's actually live. I think the problem is the other weekly DJ show I listen to is on Australian time so I always just listen to the recording, and I'm out of the habit of remembering to tune into a place at a specific date and time 😅

Bonfire Social 1.0 is live! A federated, community‑first social network built on the modular Bonfire toolkit, and it’s only the beginning.

It's time to go beyond microblogging and build apps for community organising, open science, mutual aid, and collective decision‑making. Let's take back the internet with open protocols, consent‑based governance, and portability by design.

Back the “last migration” from closed platforms to open networks: indiegogo.com/projects/bonfire

Sprachkritik »Steuerflucht«

i was doing a lot of localization work in the early 2000s and believe me you would not want to live in a world without unicode

the operating systems kinda flirted with it but apps didn't, so i am pretty confident that the thing that finally got everybody up to speed was they had to deal with xml

39C3 Photo Policy (en)

Since I've seen a lot of people discussing #39C3 photo policy, my take if anyone cares

This could have so easily been solved by creating an opt-in consent system where you could wear a pin or a sticker indicating that you consent to photos being taken. The rest of the process can be the same then because you consent to a candid photo being taken.

Don't feel yourself that day? Remove pin or sticker and poof, you no longer are part of people allowing themselves being photographed. Why skirt the policy when you could create a more clear and better system?

I have seen this on SEVERAL other events. We have the technology people

"Qualcomm-owned quietly pushed a sweeping rewrite of its Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, and the changes mark a clear break from the open-hardware ethos that built the platform."

(source: Adafruit linkedin.com/posts/adafruit_op)

Oh boy, that was fast! Somehow we need to find more future-proof models for open-source hardware. Letting the market do its thing is showing its true colors once again. Pure evil! 👿

Qualcomm-owned Arduino quietly pushed a sweeping rewrite of its Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, and the changes mark a clear break from the open-hardware ethos that built the platform.
The new documents introduce an irrevocable, perpetual license over anything users upload, broad surveillance-style monitoring of AI features, a clause preventing users from identifying potential patent infringement, years-long retention of usernames even after account deletion, and the integration of all user data (including minors) into Qualcomm’s global data ecosystem. Military weird things and more.

Several sections effectively reshape Arduino from an open community platform into a tightly controlled corporate service with deep data extraction built in. The most striking addition:

users are now explicitly forbidden from reverse-engineering or even attempting to understand how the platform works unless Arduino gives permission. That’s a profound shift for a brand long embraced by educators, makers, researchers, and open-source advocates.
