What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

The data broker industry is losing their minds over more than 150+ lawsuits filed against them by Atlas Data Privacy for alleged violations of Daniel's Law. The NJ statute gives law enforcement in that state special rights to have their personal information redacted from data broker and people-search services. The law specifically allows for non-trivial financial damages for each violation, and Atlas is seeking relief on behalf on >20k NJ residents.

And now in the face of intense lobbying by the data broker industry, NJ lawmakers are proposing to weaken Daniel's Law. The proposed changes "would remove covered individuals’ ability to select an assignee to sue to enforce Daniel’s Law on their behalf, and it would give judges discretion to award damages in such cases. Those awards are mandatory under existing law."

@Em0nM4stodonEm :official_verified: Thank you! As a publisher, we donʼt track, but we did have some ads from networks that tracked. I made a commitment to our readers (not that any asked for this) that we would be tracker-free this year. I wrote to the ad networks to see if any would go along with this and got zero replies. So we removed all their ads. Now we just have ones we run ourselves with no trackers. Didnʼt seem particularly hard to do and I wish more would.

@jackyanJack Yan (甄爵恩) @Em0nM4stodonEm :official_verified: Dutch public Radio and TV did their research years ago, and found out that advertisements have *more* benefit (read: advertisers will pay more!) from being associated to the right content than from being associated to the profiles of the readers.

For example: advertise for hammers on a page about home improvement. It is likely that people visiting such a page are interested in hammers. Maybe even at that moment.

No profile needed.

Me: *pulls queso out of my pocket*

Date: where did that come from?

Me: my house. I make my own

Date: ok but I just ordered the nachos. Do you just carry that with you everywhere?

Me: yea, in queso emergencies

Yes, everything is performative. But at what point does performance become predatory? We have this conversation about performative heterosexual males quoting bell hooks etc to seem "safe" to women while actually being quite harmful and i think it's important right now to also think about the specific harms caused when it comes to performative white allyship.

Performative DEI in the workplace alienated conscious Black ppl bc we saw straight thru the bs which in turn made us threatening

Pelosi 'nem kneeled in kufis. Black ppl said "stop killing us." BLM crosswalks. "Stop killing us." Banned blackface episodes, toppled statues, etc, all this cosmetic shit that did not do much else but ease white people's guilt without them having to grapple with real issues like wealth inequity, overfunded police, toxic workplaces, etc.

I'm saying nothing new but Ig my key point is if y'all elect Newsom bc he posted himself reading Beloved I will be disappointed but not surprised

Are we thinking about the long term consequences of performative anti-racism? I mean, I know at a certain point everything's performance or whatever but I think we're in a place where people's politics are incredibly shallow and it's partially due to 2020 imo.

When 300k usian black women are out of a job when only 5 years ago whites were begging us to educate them about how *they* dominate us it becomes a little deeper than "everything is performative"

If you're a parent, I have one request of you:

Make sure your children see you being compassionate, kind, & respectful to yourself. Make sure they see you caring for yourself.

Yes, please give so much love & compassion to them & work hard to care for them, but your children are watching you to learn how to think about & treat themselves, so you need to show them what it looks like to love yourself.

Even if you are as patient & loving as you possibly can be to them, they will still imitate you

The Alberta government released this piece of rainbow washing only two days after passing Bill 9, an omnibus bill containing the strongest anti-trans legislation yet passed in Canada.

The bill invokes the notwithstanding clause to shield it from legal challenge under the federal Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Alberta Bill of Rights, and the Alberta Human Rights act.

This press release is a foetid lie. Don't be fooled, and don't let our government get away with this.

Transgender Day of Remembrance: Minister Fir | Déclaration de la ministre Fir à l’occasion de la Journée du souvenir trans

Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women Tanya Fir issued the following statement in recognition of Transgender Day of Remembrance:“On Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honour the memory of all transgender people lost to acts of violence.

“As we mourn these losses, we are reminded of our shared responsibility to continue championing acceptance, respect and understanding for all. Today, we also reflect on the importance of building a safe society where everyone can live free from violence and prejudice.

“As Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women, I am committed to supporting Alberta’s 2SLGBTQQIA+ community and providing supports for individuals and the organizations that serve them.

“There is no place for hate or intolerance in Alberta, and our government remains a dedicated partner of transgender Albertans.”

Preserving code that shaped generations: Zork I, II, and III go Open Source
"Today, we’re preserving a cornerstone of gaming history that is near and dear to our hearts. Together, Microsoft’s Open Source Programs Office (OSPO), Team Xbox, and Activision are making Zork I, Zork II, and Zork III available under the MIT License. Our goal is simple: to place historically important code in the hands of students, teachers, and developers so they can study it, learn from it, and, perhaps most importantly, play it.
"...The games remain commercially available via The Zork Anthology on Good Old Games."

And an Ars Technica article about that:
arstechnica.com/gaming/2025/11

I originally beat Zork in the original PDP-10 version, arpanet-ing in to MIT to play it.

Today I learned that actually writing letters to various organizations actually does work, even if it means that you're sending a letter to Uruguay

Dear Ben Cartwright-Cox,

Hope you are doing well. We are contacting you from LACNIC regarding
your Bulk Whois letter request sent by post.

(for some reason LACNIC forces certain processes to be initiated by post only)

Mozilla has detailed it's pivot to AI, lazily framing its "people-first AI" vs "big tech AI" gambit as a rehash of 2000s browser wars.

Over the next three years all of Mozilla’s portfolio "will design their strategies" and "measure their success" with how much AI they're adding.

AI features in Firefox will be "opt-in", but no doubt it'll nag you to try them since Mozilla is making 20% yearly increases in non-search revenue part of its "bottom line" mission.

“What began as an effort to identify individual officers has evolved into a far more ambitious accountability tool. Soon, organizers say, every incident will be mapped to who was there, which ICE facility or federal agency they came from, what vehicle they used, who led the team, and how many times they’ve appeared in other operations.”
