If you're using the nightly or alpha version of Mastodon (from the main Git branch), the only functional Mastodon Bird UI version is under the branch dev-build-system-css-theme-tokens. There's no release or release candidate yet. While the modularization work is still in progress, the theme is already functional and much lighter thanks to the new build system.

I sometimes wonder why so many tech company marketing departments have disappeared fully up their own fundaments as far as the language of communication goes. I just got ad for "streamlining my workflow" here while reading email and...

You have to wonder how many people, ever, have looked at their hands, at the burdens set before them, and inward to some small flickering light in the quiet depths of their innermost souls, and thought "this is what I need. I need to streamline my workflow."

"We will not understand your work; we will make no connection to the notion that your work serves some greater purpose, some personal goal or higher ideal. We will leave that space empty, to be filled by your imagination or more likely nothing at all. There is no metric for writing that creates joy or purpose or meaning for its readers, no business goal for poetry to illuminate, elevate or move. It is text on screens. Don't create: generate. Generate more text. Faster. Streamline your workflow."

There will be no effort, no friction. Bright pastels and rounded corners and smoothness the line will go up. The number will go up. The line will go up. You will extrude the work product faster and more line will go more up. Productive extruded thoughty textlike work product will fast go line up easy. Streamline go up."

/ propaganda is so insidiously effective even for laypeople.

I’ve had multiple conversations with family members who: don’t speak English, don’t own computers (only mobile phones), and barely spend time online.

I told them that I am no longer working with most tech company clients because I don’t like AI and don’t want to support it (“AI” here = gen AI, LLMs).

And yet these people all reacted the same way: concern, shock, and comments like “but this is inevitable”, “this is the future”, “you’ll have to accept it eventually”, “won’t refusing it ruin your career prospects?”

These are people who know nothing about technology. They usually wouldn’t even know what “AI” meant. And yet here they are, utterly convinced of AI company talking points.

New Linux Patches Allow More Easily Changing The Tux Kernel Boot Logo

A new patch series that was posted this week allow for users to more easily replace the default kernel boot logo. While many of us are long accustomed to seeing the picture of Tux as the kernel boot logo, for those preferring to better customize your console boot experience these patches allow it to be easily manipulated via the kernel configuration "Kconfig" options...

People talk a lot about how being rich doesn’t guarantee happiness. That’s evidently true, and it’s also true that deprivation guarantees certain forms of unhappiness, but these obvious observations are not what I want to comment on. It’s also true that “everyone in the West is rich compared to blah blah blah”, but what I mean by wealth is as compared to cost of independent living within one’s home economy, not absolute wealth or wealth relative to the value of one’s labour, etc.

With that throat-clearing out of the way, I come to my comment.

What these unhappy rich people often draw attention to is things like boredom and lack of purpose. This is however kind of unrelatable to me, because if I were rich, I would spend all my time doing mathematics, creating art, learning ancient languages and reading. No matter how voracious the appetite, one can never exhaust these things…

But if you aren’t interested in these things and/or don’t have actual skills with them, the opportunity to find purpose in them is really limited no matter how much money you have. It is obviously true that if the only cultural skills you have are doomscrolling TikTok or tweeting, that will get old very quickly. This is why Elon Musk is both the richest and most miserable man in the world.

So maybe the real truth is, “Being rich doesn’t guarantee that a cultural philistine will be happy”. I am fully certain that being rich would make me very happy, and that is because of all the years I spent developing skills and interests at the kind of depth that could keep me busy till the end of my life.

2025 had ups and downs, but I loved my 2025 at .

Our team has grown with several new members and we launched izzyondroid.org/, our new web home!

We even got our first grant ever (thanks, @nlnet!), allowing us to bring download statistics to IzzyOnDroid and integrate it directly into (and soon ), improve the system and more.

I'm grateful to the team for giving me a space where I feel able to make a difference ❤️

Here is to 2026! 🎉

Reading up on CiruitPython on an EPS32 and I have the strong feeling I'm either missing something essential here or that whole thing is so much easier than people want you to believe.

Take this perspective with a grain of salt right now - I'll write more about it once the project is done.
(I still haven't pushed any code to the board and I can do basic FPGA modelling, programmed embedded boards in C and use Python for >20 years.)

Chaos Computer Club Fulda unterstützt Digital Independence Day @maglabMagrathea Laboratories

Auftakttreffen am 4. Januar 2026 – Linux-Install-Party am 1. Februar 2026
