What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

@zkatkat thanks for this. re: your 3rd para, sometimes i think about the kinds of differences of opinion that are considered consequential, that have become major rifts in some cases, in typical FOSS cultures. eg the stereotypes about bikeshedding etc. and i think for us to act as one big faction there needs to be a shift on the basics of what's considered a consequential disagreement - as you say, anything that "threatens the good of what we have built together". the rest is largely just details.

seriously fucked up shit wrt ice murder and ai

That Twitter is, as a company, perfectly fine with its site pumping out what amounts to revenge porn of ICE's recent victim, really underscores something that I think gets missed in a lot of AI discussions.

Artists can say no. If you ask an artist to collage up CSAM, they can say no. If you ask an artist to make fascist propaganda, they can say no. If you ask an artist to make abuse material degrading murder victims, they can say no.

I follow Simon's blog (@simonSimon Willison ), as I find it very informative, thorough, and enlightening.

His most recent post on LLM predictions for 2026 did catch my eye and I had a few thoughts I wanted to capture.

Keep in mind, they are not repudiations.

I happen to have more of a fascination with words and metaphors (damn humanities background), which sends me on certain journeys.

Anyway, here you go...

Just published: Apple Health + ChatGPT: The Privacy Tradeoff.

OpenAI’s new ChatGPT Health feature can connect to Apple Health (and even medical records). The convenience is real, but so is the expanded attack surface. With healthcare breaches hitting millions of records, my blunt take is: if you care about privacy, don’t use it. Full stop.

If you do use it anyway, I break down what “not used for training” does and doesn’t mean, why HIPAA isn’t a force field here, and the practical steps to reduce your blast radius.
