Yeah, kexec exists, and "guix system reconfigure ..." even generates a kexec script to reboot without going all the way into the bootloader... and sometimes even suceeds!

Maybe for some systems it is quite reliable; I have had mixed results, so not sure I would want to rely on kexec without a lot of testing...

Off the top of my head, petitboot implemented a "boot to minimal linux and kexec to full system" sort of interface... there may be other projects in this space as well.

I would like to thank anyone who named the Material UI React framework "MUI" for giving me the opportunity to meow in the office, because I've decided it will be knows as the "Meeeeww Framework", since I've zero attention span and always read it "MIU" in my head.

Twelve years. I started this project twelve years ago, and today I hold the result in my hand. It’s a book that combines bead weaving with math called, “Beading with Algorithms: Cellular Automata in Peyote Stitch.” With help from mathematician and artist Roger Antonsen, graphic designer Zelda Lin, a handful of talented proof readers, and the good people from World Scientific Publishing Company, my dream of combining my loves of math, art, and teaching into a book is finally a reality.

This book is the first of its kind, a recipe book of algorithms that can be used and combined to generate colorful patterns in peyote stitch beadwork in any size and shape you desire. These algorithms could also be applied to other pixelated art forms like tile laying, embroidery, crochet, and quilts. We included projects like bracelets, pill pouches, pendants, beaded beads, and key chains. We also included a bunch of different grids that you can photocopy and color with markers.

Of course I’m biased, but I think it’s a really beautiful book. We included multiple colorful images on almost every page, 172 pages in all. It was a huge layout challenge, but Zelda nailed it. My original goal was to write 128 pages on how to use algorithms to make beaded jewelry, but the more we explored the space, the more we found. Not just millions of algorithms, the space of possibilities is infinite. So of course, we couldn’t include them all. But we used math and Roger’s custom software that he wrote for this project to help us find dozens of the easiest algorithms and more than a hundred more in increasing levels of complexity. We included all of our favorites. 1/2

Given all the news about ICE in the past few weeks, can I kindly remind you all that RELX (owners of Elsevier & LexisNexis) is "mission-critical" to ICE.

ICE pays RELX Group and Thomson Reuters millions of dollars for the personal data it needs to fuel its big data policing program.

inthelibrarywiththeleadpipe.or

see also the book 'Data Cartels' (2022) by Sarah Lamdan.

@rmounceRoss Mounce @inthehandsPaul Cantrell Awesome that people are pointing this out. "For years, ICE has used the legal research and public records data broker to support its investigations.

In 2022, two non-profits obtained documents via Freedom of Information Act requests, which revealed that ICE performed more than 1.2 million searches over seven months using a tool called Accurint Virtual Crime Centerx

"This year, ICE has paid $4.7 million to subscribe to the service."

this doesn't mean i disagree with you that there's the possibility this helps capital more than labor. but the solution isn't to be against productivity, but instead to be trying to get those benefits for us rather than them. i agree that labor has been on the losing side of this for a long time now

Prediction:

Pinterest, as people have known it, will be dead within five years. I honestly don't think the leadership there has any idea what their userbase actually wants. The End of UX continues…

(I wonder if it's time for a version of Pinterest. Scratch that, it is definitely time!)

German police¹ is using ChatGPT to fake images of injured police officers.

After a soccer match with believable hooligan violence against police officers, the German union of police officers (GdP) rightly condemns violence against police officers.

However, instead of using real footage for their press release² of the actual violence that was actually committed, they used some AI-generated fake image and denoted that fact only with a teeny-tiny note in the corner, saying "AI-generated: ChatGPT".

I find this very problematic.

The news report mentioned several injured police officers, some badly injured, and the fake image shows an officer bleeding from his forehead. I have no way to know if any officer was actually bleeding from his head or if this is an exaggeration to make a point. In a time when politicians call for ever more surveillance and ever more power for police officers, this can function as dangerous misinformation.

Especially considering that the Nazis are growing ever stronger and our so-called democratic political parties are building a police state for them. Manufacturing consent using fake images of violence against police officers is dangerous.

Although this was a soccer match, not an anti-genocide protest, and soccer matches occasionally attract violent hooligans, protests are almost always peaceful. At least until the police starts the violence and beats up anyone who protests against fossil fuels or genocide. If we allow police to use AI-generated images in their press releases, then we cannot believe them anything anymore at all. If people still believe them, anyway.

Condemning violence only when it hits them is also hypocritical.

Police is already instigating and inciting against imagined "violent radical leftists", even before/without the use of AI fakes.

The GdP isn't innocent. Just two months ago when the modern NSDAP wanted to start their Hitler Youth equivalent and people peacefully blocked the roads, whereafter the police played taxi for officially recognized Nazis, the GdP said "the radical leftists showed their ugly face and violence".

It's inacceptable for the police to fake images of violence against police.

¹ Sachsen, not even the infamous Berlin police
² gdp.de/sachsen/de/stories/2026

AI-generated fake image of three police officers, two holding one who is bleeding heavily from his forehead.

The image is created by the union of police officers (GdP) using ChatGPT, and shared on their official GdP website for press releases. There's only a tiny notice in the corner that signals the use of GenAI to fake this image.

Cloudflare just published a vibe coded blog post claiming they implemented Matrix on cloudflare workers. They didn't, their post and README is AI generated and the code doesn't do any of the core parts of matrix that make it secure and interoperable. Instead it's littered with 'TODO: Check authorisation' and similar

i *do* want to be writing one more blog post about all of this stuff and other things. but i'm probably gonna be keeping it to that because i don't think that public debate is having any effect other than making us all upset at each other rather than capital.

ai also deserves better critics, because there's a lot to legitimately criticize. but i am not gonna be that person, because frankly i do not want to be associated with ai's current most strident critics. and that's most of what ai criticism is right now. unfortunate.

i find a lot of ai booster people annoying. i've long found silicon valley "whatever the latest tech is" boosters annoying. i find a lot of the ai criticism annoying. they refuse to engage with the world as it is, rather than as they want it to be, and often harm their cause with how they act
