Ukraine and Russia appear to remain far apart on key points as talks resume

Ukraine has said the conflict should be frozen along the current front lines and rejects any unilateral pullback of its forces. Kyiv says ‌it wants control of the Zaporizhzhia power plant.

Russia occupies about 20 percent of Ukraine’s national territory, including Crimea and parts of the eastern Donbas region seized before the 2022 invasion.

Moscow says Russia must control nuclear plant, but open to working with US

Russia is ‍ready ‍for international cooperation over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, including with the United States.

However, the facility must be under Russian control, said Alexei Likhachev, head ‍of the state nuclear corporation Rosatom.

The six reactors are not in operation, and the plant ‌relies on external power to keep its nuclear material cool ‍and prevent a catastrophic accident.

Kidney damage

In the UK, more than 10% of the population is estimated to have some stage of chronic kidney disease and more than 600,000 people develop some form of acute kidney injury each year.

The kidneys play a vital role in maintaining overall health by filtering waste, excess fluids and electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, from the blood. They also help regulate blood pressure, red blood cell production and calcium balance in the body.
1/

2/
When the kidneys are damaged, their ability to filter waste and maintain balance is compromised, leading to a buildup of toxins, fluid retention, and an imbalance in electrolytes. This can cause a range of health problems, from high blood pressure to heart disease and weakened bones. Kidney damage can progress to chronic kidney disease and kidney failure over time.

I recently saw someone leave fedi at least temporarily as a result of harassment, and one thing they highlighted was that most of us don't see the harassment they were getting because of how federation works and the fact that our instances block all the vile ones most of the harassment was coming from.

They were running their own single-user instance. 🙁

We really need better resources for single user instances to benefit from third-party moderation resources, but we also need to get the narrative out that running a single user instance is a horrible idea unless you want to be your own fulltime moderator or drowned in engagement from the worst parts of the net. Treating it as a viable option now really sours folks to the whole concept.

鬼 (oni) “Demon”

Sometimes translated as “demon”, “devil” or “ogre”, an oni is a traditional Japanese monster typically depicted as wearing a tiger pelt and carrying an iron club. They usually have red or blue skin and horns. They are popular characters in Japanese fairy tales and legends.

In early February the annual bean-throwing festival is practiced to drive out oni and to welcome in spring.

Cementing sloths’ reputation as the cuddliest tree-dwelling mammals, this mother and baby sloth curl up together in an animal rescue centre in Costa Rica. Along with a male sloth, they were found in the Santa Elena hills of Nicoya, far outside their natural range, raising suspicions that they had been stolen as part of the illegal wildlife trade.

Bear’s-eye view … this image comes from a camera attached to a grizzly bear’s collar, as part of a project run by Washington State University and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The bears live on Alaska’s north slope, at the very top of the state. Researchers are trying to find out how they manage to eat enough to stay alive despite hibernating for eight months of the year.
