What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

My sixteen-year-old Chilean nephew was curious about what’s going on with ICE.

In Chile, the word “conservative” is associated with capitalism, and the word “liberal” is associated with communism. He observed that Donald Trump says he’s a capitalist but doesn’t act like one.

I told him things are different here and labels have different meanings because we have a different history.

"Office of Budget and Management Director Russell Vought killed USAID, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths, and is now using the money he 'saved' to bankroll his security detail.

A Reuters report Friday states that the Project 2025 architect who promised to put federal employees 'in trauma' is spending $15 million of former USAID funding—"

Idle physics-crank-adjacent question: what do people have against dark matter?! (Explaining cosmology without recourse to DM seems to be a popular crackpot theme.)

The universe has no obligation to be...detectable to us. Like, sure it's weird that DM doesn't, but is there any compelling reason why every kind of stuff should interact with electromagnetism? At least it still obeys gravity.

Then again I've probably read too much early science fiction/cosmic horror involving vast alien forces beyond our comprehension that we simply have not evolved to sense, etc. I like the idea of mysterious clouds of totally invisible stuff just floating around out there.

Meanwhile dark energy is sitting there in the corner being sadly ignored.

RE: infosec.exchange/@munin/116066

Throwing 'shocking' videos at people - especially unexpectedly - is not going to result in activist activation in most cases.

Instead, most people are going to find this traumatizing and take steps to avoid this.

Which is going to exacerbate the frustration of the people who are concerned because "nobody cares" about the outrages

Which causes them to try shoving even more 'shocking' content in people's faces

Resulting in more avoidant behaviors

Et

fucking

cetera.

And this may be an unfortunate shock to some people,

but if you're thinking that you -have- to throw violent videos in peoples faces "so that they know what's going on"

You need therapy, because you are exhibiting a specific etiology of PTSD.

"There's no way they can understand unless they experience the same thing" is a -trauma response-

Flinging those at other people is, again, not going to make them 'care' the way you do; it is going to drive avoidant behaviors and the aforementioned vicious fucking cycle.

Ok, I think I'm just gonna remove bit order support from device-driver and assume everything is Lsb0.

It's just so weird my brain can't handle it and I've never seen it be used. And if it's really required, well then the register interface implementation can reverse the bits.

Has anybody actually ever seen or used a device of which the datasheet says bit 0 which then means the most significant bit?

If you do, please let me know before I delete this feature!

I saw yet another “CSS is a massively bloated mess” whine and I’m like. My dude. My brother in Chromium. It is trying as hard as it can to express the totality of visual presentation and layout design and typography and animation and digital interactivity and a few other things in a human-readable text format. It’s not bloated, it’s fantastically ambitious. Its reach is greater than most of us can hope to grasp. Put some *respect* on its *name*.
