The UK has announced plans to fast-track legislation requiring โ€œage verification for VPN useโ€. The correct term, however, is not age verification but identity verification.

A law like this would require everyone to identify themselves in order to use a VPN. This would pose a risk to whistleblowers, violate human rights, and represent yet another step toward an authoritarian society.

Hello, Fediverse ๐Ÿ‘‹

I'm Sophie. I run a digital ops consultancy from the south of France, working with purpose-led businesses.

I'm in the process of leaving Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. I got tired of building on platforms that sell our data, gut safety systems to please politicians, and treat people as products.

Still figuring it all out. Would love to connect.

Illustration in warm sand, ochre and teal tones. A woman stands at the water's edge, looking out towards rolling hills and winding paths ahead. Textured, painterly style.

It occurs to me that there are other voices we should be listening to that aren't European or American in our internet spaces.

So Fediverse who else should we be reading when we worry about Internet Freedom?

About the centralisation dangers and censorship on the internet?

Who are we drowning out?

EDIT: :BoostOK:

Like seriously, if you have a suggestion please reply. I'm enthusiastically asking.

@onepictEsther Payne :bisexual_flag: Chinese activists. The PRC has the most sophisticated and comprehensive internet censorship and filtering mechanism in the world, and importantly: they also export their technology and knowledge to other repressive regimes.

The Great Firewall Report site for technical reports and descriptions of censorship mechanisms: gfw.report/en/
The Net4People forum, hosted on Github issues, where people (not only Chinese but also Russians, Iranians, etc) discuss network censorship: github.com/net4people/bbs

Also in June of 2025, the French city of Lyon announced it would also stop using Microsoft Office for its 10,000 employees, and switch to an # software alternative. City officials pointed to licensing costs, end-of-life transition costs for version changes, and control of their own data, were reasons cited.

techradar.com/pro/one-of-franc

Previously reported by yours truly, in January of 2026, France announced they would cancel Microsoft Teams for all national government employees and instead move to an OSS alternative that also stored all data on French cloud services.

I opened a issue in the swicg ActivityPub API repo about a gap i keep running into: how does a C2S client access server-local metadata about foreign objects?

Thread collections, read status, notifications โ€” your server knows things about remote objects that the client needs, but AP has no vocabulary for it.

Remember the "One Laptop Per Child" project, that developed a low-cost computer for children in developing countries? I was always amazed by a certain feature: The "View Source" button.

When you pressed it, the source code for the currently running application would open. This was supposed to encourage tinkering with the software on your device! <3

I've been pondering what it would take to build that button on modern machines. Has anyone seen something like that?

(Prototype in next toot.)

A white-and-green laptop with funny antennae, that looks a mix of a toy/handheld console and a small laptop.Screenshot of the "View source" feature. A window showing Python source files has opened.

Say you're writing a Rust macro. There's no way for your macro to issue a warning (not an error), right? Google finds only old discussions where people suggested this and were shot down.

(There is a crate that fakes it by doing something grody.)

In case you didn't make it to FOSDEM (or didn't manage to get in the packed room), the recording of our talk is now available!

@adz and @tbernardTobias Bernard are talking about our broader goals and the ongoing work on p2panda and Reflection.

And yes, the orbital AI datacenter thing is real, and 2 companies that I know of have already filed with the FCC for over a million satellites for this completely untested, fucking stupid idea. Fuck you, SpaceX, for one million satellites and using pseudo-religious language in your filing.

Instructions on how you can submit a comment to the FCC telling them that you also think this is stupid are here! darksky.org/news/two-satellite
