All documents published by the Ideographic Research Group (IRG) are now available on the Unicode web site, and can be easily and efficiently found through the new search bar provided on the IRG homepage.

🔗 unicode.org/irg/

This long-awaited search feature is very convenient, and so useful to find what you're interested in, and even more (ah, the wonderful power of serendipity!)...

Started laying out a rough plan for implementing FEP-ef61: Portable Objects in —server-independent identities backed by , multi-server replication, and client-side signing. It's going to be a long road (13 tasks across 5 phases, with a few open questions that need answering before we even begin), but I think it's worth doing right.

I am a luddite and to me there is a lot of joy in technology. In technology that we deploy for all our wellbeing. Solar panels and vaccines, high-speed rail and wikipedia.

But they joy stems from the feeling of being able to be part of humanity in an embedded, meaningful way. Not from buying shit.

What bothers me isn't code generation.

That's not necessarily a bad idea if done correctly*.

* (with precise tools, and not this arrogant chatbot shit)

What bothers me is the technofascist makeover of our world.

Nice example of "esprit de corps", which most managers never achieve with their teams. Astronauts are a special breed and NASA seems to be an awesome place to work.

I am deeply grateful to my fellow Expedition 74 members as well as the entire NASA team, SpaceX, and the medical professionals at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla near San Diego. Their professionalism and dedication ensured a positive outcome.

Over the past few years, the number of launches has skyrocketed.

There are now nearly 15 000 active in orbit around the Earth, most of them part of mega-constellations in which each satellite has a service life of only a few years.

New satellites must be quickly launched as replacements. To avoid leaving old, dead satellites in Earth’s already-crowded low orbits, most satellite operators deliberately de-orbit them into Earth’s upper atmosphere.

That approach is now being taken to a vastly larger scale and there are implications for Earth’s and .

Rocket launches already contribute to climate change and depletion.

Scaling them up to deploy a million aircraft-sized satellites would push upper-atmosphere heating and ozone loss far beyond previous estimates, with the steady burn-up of dead satellites compounding the impacts.

This is just a fraction of what is to come if planned mega-constellations go ahead. Operators worldwide have already asked for a combined total of over one million satellites.

The very smallest particles, finer than a human hair, can stay suspended in the atmosphere for years, contributing to ozone depletion and climate change.

A million satellites could mean that a teragram of alumina accumulates in the upper atmosphere – enough, alongside launch emissions, to significantly alter atmospheric chemistry and heating in dramatic ways we do not yet understand.

There is no public mandate for a single company in one country to make changes on that scale to the planet’s atmosphere.

The best advice I have for new nerds: Refuse to pay rent.

Don't subscribe. Don't lease. Don't use their cloud. Don't slip down the freemium slope. Don't create accounts on their services.

Buy it once. Run it local. Avoid commercial software.

It'll be a huge pain and you'll be an outsider but it'll be endless, interesting, and hard fun that'll pay you back with a curious mind and an understanding of the fabric of our intellectual infrastructure that will make you light-years more capable, useful, and healthy than the "AI" zombies.
