What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

The Mastodon API is open source, but it is not an open standard. It is designed, maintained, and changed by one project, without input from the rest of the ecosystem.

Not without. The design of this API is shaped by the needs Mastodon users. Sometimes PRs are submitted by developers of 3rd party clients and by developers of other servers. Independent implementers of Mastodon API often extend it, and copy each other's extensions, there is even a discussion about Mastodon API Enhancement Proposals (similar to FEPs).

So I think that by now it is very much an open standard.

ActivityPub API may have W3C's stamp or approval, but that doesn't mean anything if nobody uses it.

P.S. Does your blog not federate anymore?

@silverpill @fediversereportConnected Places

It would probably be really good for the ecosystem if @Mastodon was explicit about reuse and reimplementation of its API.

In particular, a license or IP non-assertion pledge that says, as far as Mastodon is concerned, anyone can clone their API in a new implementation, regardless of code license, and Mastodon won't assert patent, trademark, copyright, or other rights against them.

I should know enough trans people, autists, and retrocomp geeks to get useful information out of this question.

Tragically, with the current state of web search, this is less a matter of "lazy google" and more of an example of "We have unjustly slain the librarian."

Does anyone have any good resources on computing in the soviet union in the 70s and 80s that isn't just Skala? I'm getting way too obsessive about a writing problem.

I am especially interested in anything where a user interface becomes relevant: ICS workstations, desktop computers, the whole bit.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for your help I am SWIMMING in new threads to pull on now.

I'd like the dudes on this international women's day, even those posting about it, to do a quick look around of their lives, take stock. Are there a lot of women in your circles and spaces? If not, now might be a great time to reflect on that and start asking questions and thinking about changes you could make to improve that.

Bad news 😔💔

I am sad to announce today that unfortunately I will not be working with Privacy Guides anymore after the end of this month.

Good news! 🚨 :awesome:

I will be available for a new position or contract, starting in April!

I am looking for a position or contact for:

✊ Digital rights activist (with a specialty in privacy rights)

🔒 Privacy expert or consultant

:mastodon: Fediverse and Mastodon advocate

🙌 Managerial position

📰 Tech journalist

💻 Technical writer

💚 Or any other fitting positions

I am especially interested in working with nonprofit organisations, cooperatives, open-source projects, privacy-oriented software companies, or any other organisations working for the public good.

🇨🇦 Remote from Canada

:no_AI_logo: All the work I produce is guaranteed to be AI-free

Let me know if you hear of any good opportunities!

Look, it's a mess out there and you can react to that mess by deciding everyone else is a moron or you could react to it by deciding most people are trying to get by with a different context than yours and start working the problem. Those are your choices pretty much, can't choose "no mess"

This is all starting to change though, and I think it came out of being intentional about who I platform and how. Where do I spend my time? How do I be intentional about the content I consume, and how do I increase the volume of industry content from people who identify as women or non-binary people?

When I go to product events now, I spend more time talking to women and non-binary people. These conversations are so much better.

Once you start looking, you find an incredible gold mine of brilliant tech people, like:
- @RuthMalan
- @dahukannaDawn Ahukanna
- @grimalkinaCat Hicks
- @elizayerElizabeth Ayer
- @hazelweakly
- @renata
- @iris_meredithIris
- @mcc
- @cwebberChristine Lemmer-Webber

All people who absolutely need to be platformed more.

What's your content diet, and how do actively shift your consumption to something more interesting?

I've been really lucky to have so many high profile men/allies support me in my journey. They shared their platform with me and actively sponsor my work.

But where are the women? Is it because I never sought out community with women because I never felt like I belonged there?

I don't know.

I've spent the last 10 years in tech. I'm trying to come up with a list of women who've truly advocated for me in my career, and my list is so much longer from the years before tech. In recent years, my woman-identified advocates have been from outside tech too.

Such an uncomfortable fact to sit with.

I also think adoption of the ActivityPub API will follow a ratchet pattern between servers and clients.

We're already seeing a number of server implementations appear.

This is making clients like checkin.swf.pub/ or github.com/evanp/ap possible and interesting.

As these clients increase in functionality and popularity, we're going to see pressure by users on more "mainstream" servers like Mastodon to implement the ActivityPub API.

This is your official notice that we'll be making a major security release for Sharkey tomorrow (between and ) in coordination with Misskey. Please be ready to patch your instances soon as humanly possible, as the vulnerabilities at play are extremely severe. Note that IceShrimp and Firefish derivatives are not affected, only direct forks of Misskey.
