What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Oh no, again? Who could have seen it coming?!

Narrator: anyone could have seen it coming.

Also, this is a new thing, not the old thing reported on a few weeks ago:

Thank you to the 200+ attendees who stopped by Booth #112 to connect, share stories, and talk about what you're building with FreeBSD or how you got started with FreeBSD.

The energy this year was a testament to the strength of the open-source community, from longtime contributors to those discovering FreeBSD for the first time.

If you're just getting started with FreeBSD, here’s a clear place to begin:

See you at the next one.

"AI can make mistakes, always check the results"

I fucking loathe this phrase and everything that goes into it. It's not advice. It's a threat.

You probably read it as "AI is _capable_ of making mistakes; you _should_ check the results".

What it actually says is "AI is _permitted_ to make mistakes; _you are liable_ for the results, whether you check them or not".

Except "you" is generally not even the person building, installing, or even using the AI. It's the person the AI is used on:

I really don't know what development on my own apps looks like, going forward. It's like going back to being Clark Kent when you're moonlighting as Superman. I can't imagine working on my existing apps like I have been with my Codex-built projects, and I'm not sure how to bridge the two ways of working. It's beginning to become difficult to imagine writing code by hand again, and it's only been a month 😐

I need volunteers for a test. I’m hosting page on my experimental micropython esp32s3 node. Could you connect with nomadnet capable browser (MeshChat would do fine) with a tcp interface to rn.varnatransport.com:4243 and see if you can load the page? On the page there’s a link with mp3 - easter egg message (2kb) 😁 The page is hosted on the esp32s3 itself (below). I’ll leave the node online for few hours to see if it’s stable with more than one link (me).

As privacy activists, it's important to support the tools and organizations with good practices, but also to lead by example when it comes to moving away from the surveillance ecosystem.

Mass surveillance and censorship are escalating in many countries right now. There is a global attack on secure encrypted communication. Often, authorities, politicians, and tech companies work together to push for new laws. One example: when Ashton Kutcher (yes, the actor), through his tech company Thorn, tried to introduce total surveillance of all EU citizens through undemocratic and corrupt methods.

bitchy rant about Linux accessibility from a grouchy blind nerd, mh-

I had a power cut yesterday and it knocked my servers offline. Now one of them is complaining that fsck can't find a UUID and can't boot properly. Guess what? No SSH, no console speech. Thanks, Linux. Now I have no choice but to use AI to fix it or wait between several hours and several days to get a sighted person in. After all, we all have perfect vision and can read the video output which is still functioning. Linux is for everyone, amirite? Grandma's totally gonna be able to figure out wtf udev is when Mint shits the bed after the power goes out during a storm and she'll totally remember to swap the cells out on her UPS every 2 to 3 years

Big news for Mastodon GmbH. They have formally joined forces with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

If you’re not in the design/tech world, trust me when I say this is a big step for the fediverse. The W3C establishes the standards used for the internet.

This is a solid path forward for small tech.

It turns out GenAI code changes are causing serious incidents and outages at Amazon with "high blast radius" arstechnica.com/ai/2026/03/aft

Junior / middle engineers no longer allowed to push GenAI code to production without senior engineer review

Here is a very concise reason I absolutely loathe "AI" chatbots.

Stop making ME do the mental labour required for YOU to promote your business or offer your services.

I'm looking for a tech spec, a price list, to book an appointment, or fast answer to a concise question. I will get this in one of 3 ways:

Your well-produced web site & FAQ ...
Your helpful human expert staff who quickly understand my slightly uncommon need and your offerings...

Your competitor who offers one of the above.

Meta acquired Moltbook, the AI agent social network that went viral because of fake posts:

"Moltbook is joining Meta Superintelligence Labs, a Meta spokesperson told us. Moltbook creators Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr will join the team as part of the acquisition. Deal terms were not disclosed."

Didn’t one of the founders already go to OpenAI? techcrunch.com/2026/03/10/meta
