What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

UK Government Minister’s X Account Hacked to Promote Crypto Scam

Lucy Powell’s X account was hijacked to push a bogus "House of Commons Coin" ($HCC)

Scam posts claimed it was a “community-driven” token and used Parliament’s logo

Analysts say it was a typical low-scale “pump and dump” worth just £225

Experts warn public figures are being targeted via phishing and data leaks

So why is Microsoft insisting on pushing out a feature it is very clear users just do not want? What is the point of it? It just does not make any sense. Recall makes no sense. It is one of rather many functions that Microsoft wants to force people into using.

Personally I also do not want Copilot on my computer and the idea that there can be a key on my keyboard that I can press that will enable by mistake it is not what I would think most people want.

I believe that there should be a very clear line between what is on your computer and what is in the cloud. Forcing people to log into a Microsoft online account to use their computer is crazy. Having people mistakenly enabling OneDrive is another disaster.

I guess this is all a great opportunity for Linux.

In an unprecedented move, the Japan Fair Trade Commission has issued a cease-and-desist order against Google for violating the country's anti-monopoly law by forcing manufacturers to preinstall the company’s apps on their Android smartphones. japantimes.co.jp/business/2025

I don’t think sewing machines get enough recognition for what amazing pieces of engineering they are. Remarkably complex and high precision gearing (especially the multi-stitch versions), highly reliable, most are serviceable (some by pros, some by users), and remarkably cheap for all that high precision and complexity.

The initial konilo-over-irc system is running in the and # channels on libera.chat. This provides a full system, with separate memory, block storage, and stacks per user, and persistence between uses. It uses a lightly modified version of the standard VM, and runs on a stock system.

The initial code snapshot has been released on my patreon, and a general release will be made in the next few weeks, after further testing, cleanups, and documenting.

I've also been working on a hosted shell-based system, which should be released to my patrons within a few days, and more broadly next month.
