What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Today I saw a video of a reporter asking a kid about their opinion on the India Pakistan situation. The kid expressed that he hopes both countries prosper and everyone feels safe. The reporter went on to ask the kid why he does not wish ill for pakistan if he is patriotic. The kid calmly responded saying I don't need to wish ill for anyone in another country to be patriotic, they are also human beings. The reporter went ahead to ask his name ( a way to insinuate his religion ).

I turn on my PC.

The local wildlife are immediately sterilised by the excessive output from my four exposed nuclear reactors running at a critically risky heat output.

The sound of 10,000 cooling fans deafens the city’s morning traffic as my warehouse of 500 parallel-chained AMD Razer Threadrippers bursts into life, forming the equivalent processing power of 2015 in one room.

Nearby, my cluster of Nvidia 6090 Test Cards begins to warp the local time continuum as they calculate answers man was never meant to know.

Very gently, I open Microsoft Teams.

Instantly, the already deafening noise of fans increases to a murderous wail as they try to keep my equipment at operating temperatures. A nuclear reactors’ fusion catches up with its cooling and explodes destroying the lives of millions. The floor begins to melt away as my processors over clocked ten-fold reach critical mass and descend directly into hell. My Nvidia cluster collapses into a singularity and begins to devour the planet.

Quickly now, I open a text chat, it’s a bit laggy.

The sheer struggle of loading some text destroys the remaining systems. Me and my equipment are deleted from reality by an unknown overseer.

Octopus Energy posted me a 321 A4 page electricity bill printed out on paper as a physical 5cm thick package (on their "Agile tariff" the rate changes every half hour, so there are 48 line items per day). I enquired as to why they'd done that?
Apparently they tried to email it first, but the 15 MB email exceeded my email server's size limit, so they posted a hard copy instead.

321 pages (A4) of paper electricity bills folded in half, printed both sides wrapped in an elastic band.

In order to search for a string in some files, use 'grep' like this:

grep "string" filename1 [filename2 filename3 ...]

This will print out the lines in the files that contain the string. grep can
also do a lot more advanced searches - type 'man grep' for details.

badge picked up! even got ribbons this time (albeit the lowest common denominators of pronouns & contact comfort level)

On the front, I shouldn't be surprised at this point, but I was still expecting more than 1% mask wearing from this crowd 😓

(Which is rich coming from me, since I was out & about last night w/o a mask for the first time in years; but I did have nasal spray in play & was picking venues for thin crowd / open windows. & am masking while in the CC!)

Lots of free-threading (PEP703) content at this year, including a couple of long discussions at the Language Summit yesterday, and three talks back-to-back right after the first keynote.

We're also organising an Open Space right after lunch on Friday, for folks who want to talk more, hear more, or ask questions. Friday, 2pm, room 315!

I've just received an email about internetphonebook.net to an address that it's feasible I signed up to them with - but I am clueless, or have totally forgotten!

Is anyone here associated with this project? Is it real? Do I want a copy?

@bcantrillBryan Cantrill I heard that the pod needed more snarky audio comments!

As a 15+ year remote work veteran, I've found that you can fix reverb issues with a professional headset :P I've been rocking a Jabra Evolve2 65 for like 5 years now and it'll filter out basically everything (has a mic on the outside too so it can cancel out external noise). Great for taking meetings in a disco; probably works in your mom's house too ;)
