I had a dream that a hundred years from now, video games were built on a teetering, telescoping tower of dependencies all the way back to the engines and drivers of today, and there were century-old bugs everyone just put up with because every attempted fix had too many side effects on newer layers.

Less than a week to go before our next meetup!

This month we’re real excited to have our main talk by Zeeshan from @oxidecomputerOxide Computer Company presenting some of his work on multicast networking! And for the newer Rustaceans, we’ve got a beginner-friendly talk on mutablity and the common ways it’s misunderstood.

WORDS SUCH AS HANDICAPPED, disabled, or differently abled are treacherous, as they allow us to label people in ways that ignore the full humanity of the person we’re attempting to describe. We so often diminish people who don’t fit the norm; when we see someone in a wheelchair, we’re more likely to address the person tending them instead of the person sitting in the chair.

Resilience is a word we truly understand only when life demands it from us. The storms of life are inevitable—setbacks, losses, changes we didn’t anticipate. But resilience isn’t about avoiding those storms. It’s about having the strength, the tools, and the mindset to navigate them and come out stronger on the other side.

From the preface by John C. Maxwell

@0x00stringNullstring 🏴‍☠️ ah, I thought it was weird that they described it as

a network of electronic devices located throughout the New York tristate area that were used to conduct multiple telecommunications-related threats directed towards senior U.S. government officials

and was thinking, why would you need that many devices for that? But your explanation makes sense, if this was an SMS fraud service and just one of their users decided to poke the US law enforcement bear through it...

To paraphrase Vladimir Putin: most of us know where Greenland is, but we never think of it. Now, Putin was taking a shot at Australia when he muttered these words, but the point is rather apt. Greenland and Australia are both large islands with comparatively small populations dispersed across vast territories. Both are usually at the periphery of day-to-day geopolitics, and neither is regarded as a major power in strategic affairs.

The Water Diaries: Living With the Global Water Crisis in Bangladesh and Kenya by Sonia Hoque & Rob Hope, 2025

Cyclones, flash floods, droughts, and pollution batter the aspirations of people living at the sharp end of water insecurity. By charting the daily water use behaviour of people in Kenya and Bangladesh for a year, this book explores the intersecting drivers of global water risks and the spatial and seasonal inequalities.

Comprising a clear methodological chapter and four detailed case studies of both urban and rural areas, it critically reviews existing policy and institutional design, arguing for a new architecture in allocating risks and responsibilities fairly and effectively between government, communities, enterprises, and water users. In identifying the risks and potential responses for policy and investment action, it provides theoretical insights and a practical guide to developing more effective policy in Kenya and Bangladesh, with solutions that will be applicable in other regions facing similar challenges. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

This Is for Everyone by Tim Berners-Lee, 2025

In this intimate memoir, Berners-Lee tells the story of his iconic invention, exploring how it launched a new era of creativity and collaboration, while unleashing a commercial race that today imperils democracies and polarizes public debate.

Filled with his characteristic optimism, technical insight and wry humour, this is a book about the power of technology -

– both to fuel our worst instincts and to profoundly shape our lives for the better.

The most influential inventor of the modern world, Sir Tim Berners-Lee is a different kind of visionary. Born in the same year as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, Berners-Lee famously distributed his invention, the World Wide Web, for no commercial reward. Its widespread adoption changed everything – transforming humanity into the first digital species. Through the web, we live, work, dream and connect.

As the rapid development of artificial intelligence heralds a new era of innovation, Berners-Lee is the perfect guide to the crucial decisions ahead – and provides a gripping, in-the-room account of the rise of the online world. Peppered with rich anecdote and amusing reflections, This is For Everyone is an essential read for understanding our times, and a bold manifesto for advancing humanity's future.

Mass influx of displaced Palestinians in central Gaza

Israel initially instructed families to move to the so-called “humanitarian safe zone” of al-Mawasi in the south. But as everyone knows, this area is extremely overcrowded, and the humanitarian infrastructure there can’t meet the demands of the population.

That’s why we’ve seen a modified Israeli stance telling people to move to central Gaza, which is where we are now.

This is a place that has received a mass influx of families. They are struggling to find refuge and are living next to buildings destroyed by Israeli warplanes. There’s no sign of humanitarian infrastructure – no water wells, no aid centres, no healthcare facilities.

People are living in flimsy tents in the searing heat. Some are sleeping in the open with their personal belongings scattered everywhere. They are completely vulnerable.

slight miscalculation

I bought a gaming PC. It's the first time I buy a computer for the express purpose of playing games*. I usually play on consoles.

I wanted to do a custom build. But this prebuilt seems good enough and has most of the things I had in my parts list. Plus I sort of got abnormal work-related deal to make it cost less. And...

I got it for my birthday. For this year's birthday. Which, I was told once, it was probable I wouldn't reach it.

But now the thing is here.

And...
