What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

Jan told us that prior to those years, Prague was about equally divided between Czechs, Jews, and Germans, three ancient cultures that had lived side by side in that area for millennia.

Then that all ended catastrophically, with the mass murder of the Jewish population by the Nazis, followed by the Czechs' expulsion of the Germans (for their collaboration with the Nazis) after the war.

Jan said the longterm effect was to decimate the cultural richness of a city long known for its diversity, rich crosscultural interchanges, diversity, and tolerance.

I think of this and think of all the people in the US right now who imagine that by pushing the kind of people who own and operate this Mexican restaurant away, sending them packing, we'll build a better, healthier, more humane society.

I think about all of this and remember a conversation we had in April 2008 with the owner of the b and b at which we stayed in Prague, the Velké Boty, owned by an interesting couple, Jan and Charlotta. Charlotta played a leading role in helping translate the post-Soviet Czech constitution into English.

The conversation I'm remembering was about what the Nazi era and WWII and its aftermath did to Prague.

Hello everyone! 👋

I’m excited to join this community and share a little corner of my world with you all. I’m passionate about baking (mostly bread), gardening (letting plants grow as they please), and exploring nature through hiking and photography.

I’m not much of a writer, so I’ll mostly share photos of my adventures — the good, the messy, and the funny. 🌿🍞📸

Thanks for stopping by and thanks to @brudibrauBrudi Bräu for hosting me ❤️
I’m looking forward to new friendships along the way!

消費減税は処方箋か 「高市1強」で日本経済がはらむリスクとは:朝日新聞 asahi.com/articles/ASV2F2T7SV2

My spouse and I went today to a favoriteTex-Mex restaurant and were touched when, at meal's end, the waiter brought us complimentary servings of heart-shaped flan. Everything about the restaurant lifted my spirits on a gray, wet, coldish late-winter day — bright colors everywhere, pulsating salsa music, delicious food, smiling, friendly, welcoming wait staff, all immigrants.

I'm starting to expect to have to hear, for the rest of my life, over and over and over, about how *this* new version of the AI garbage machine is *the* magic version that finally makes all the lies true. So sick of it.

The AI stuff fills me with anxiety mostly because it's happening in the imperial, capitalist ecocide - and accelerating it.

What if there were narrow models, trained consensually, forced to use renewables, x, y, z? What if "I might lose my job" was actually a good thing? That's not our timeline sadly, but it is how it could look. Needs to look!

For me this is the perspective. The dynamic hasn't changed, it's "just" accelerating.

Just seems like a golden opportunity now to surface and delete bullshit jobs as well as surfacing and highlighting actually-very-useful jobs.

We should be challenging any outspoken AI-maxxers about their opinions on UBI and working hours, forcing their hand to speak up for life and dignity - or outing themselves as monsters.
