What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I imagine this depends on the platform to some degree, but I have an question: Is the home timeline chronological on post publish or when your instance becomes aware of the post?

For context, @postssw'as — still practising sometimes publishes a post with a publish time well in the past, for instance right now the most recent post delivered to followers (delivered just now) has a publish time which was 18 hours ago. Does this show up in your feed now, or never get seen because the feed files it away chronologically with all the other 18 hour ago posts?

@simon@bne.social the concept of a "timeline" isn't defined in ActivityPub at all, so any assumptions you can make are implementation-dependant.

For example, in NodeBB when a new post is made, the entire thread is brought back up to the top of the category, as is normal behaviour for a forum. In our "feed view" (upcoming in v4.9.0), it will behave that way too.

Introducing WebAccessBench, a novel benchmark for AI language models to assess quality and WCAG conformance in generated web interfaces under realistic prompting conditions.

I did a bit of research and found that LLMs are incredibly bad at basic digital accessibility tasks. You can compare models and read the full white paper at conesible.de/wab.

Overall data suggests massive implications for society at large, and major discrimination of people with disabilities.

A sharepic that lists all benchmarked models and their score in a bar chart. Find them listed at https://conesible.de/wab. Beneath is a preview of the whitepaper PDF.

:blobhyperthink:

The current fediverse is an evolutionary dead-end for 2 reasons:

1. It has painted itself in a small niche of decentralizing typical social media use cases, by means of post-facto interop and the introduction of protocol decay.

2. Lacking a proper grassroots standardization process, and with the primary mechanism for fediverse extension being only post-facto interoperability, there is no way out.

Congratulations to the early adopters, who managed to "cross the chasm" with their own app platforms. It took true grit to become deep experts, and plug holes needed for your app, but you have made it. Post-facto interop works in your favor now. You are unrestrained to productively add more features in your app, and put them on the fedi wire for others to deal with.

To avoid fedi to become less and less attractive to newcomers, we must now consider:

Israel has been dumping herbicides throughout southern Lebanon as part of a concerted ecocide campaign to render the region uninhabitable. This has been going on for months with Lebanese journalists & environmentalists regularly reporting on it. The BBC: we don’t know why the Israelis are doing it

“The purpose behind the release of herbicide on the villages remains unclear.”
