What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

What if... you had one Fedi account on a generic headless server that simply hosts and federates your data... and had C2S UIs for microblogging, long form writing, media editing and sharing, link aggregation, games, fitness tracking, and so on, that all used that same Fedi account. Technically, it's a similar concept as ATProto (but no relay and app view) and Solid Pods (but no RDF).

It seems possible... if we can improve the AP C2S API/protocol sufficiently.

@steveSteve Bate This is exactly the sort of thing I'm hoping we see on the Fediverse

One thing that might need some careful design is: how to scope down the access that each of the C2S-connected apps have? A game for example doesn't need to be able to read all of my/my friends' messages, only game-related ones

I think the work Spritely's been doing could be a good building block for such a generic server

Do you want to hide posts that link to certain websites? You can do this with Mastodon Filters:

1. Create a new filter
2. Add domain names of the sites that you don't want to see links to (e.g. example.com), use new keyword for each domain
3. UN-tick box marked "whole word" for each keyword
4. Save filter

If you're not familiar with using filters, there are easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions for creating filters in the guide at:

Good day all! In 30 min from this post!

The #livestream will be on: stream.firesidefedi.live

Special Guest: @lrnz@feed.lrnz.it

Artist | Visual Designer. Geist Maschine.

So don't miss it!

It will happen on 24 February 2026 at 12:00 US Eastern Time ( UTC-5 )

If by any ungodly chance you miss the show:

#PeerTube ( #VOD ): tubefree.org/@firesidefedi

#firesidefedi #fediverse #fedi #interview #freesoftware #opensource #userfreedom #freedom #resistance

A dark image. The background is unclear and blurry. On the foreground on the left there is a huge circle, inside of which a profile picture belonging to @lrnz@feed.lrnz.it. On the other side, a bit lower in the frame we see a fediverse logo, but on fire. This is the logo of the Fireside Fedi show. In between those two elements a text is written. This text says:

The atmosphere has some great labelers that do an amazing job of moderating. But as PDS admins, we do not have a great solution to use these amazing resources. So I created label-watcher. It subscribes to multiple labelers and notifies you if a user on your PDS gets labeled by a watched label.

Anthropic is putting out this report about DeepSeek at the same time that the administration is reporting that DeepSeek v4 was trained on NVIDIA hardware that evaded export controls. This smells like DeepSeek is going to drop something impactful next week.

RE: mastodon.social/@tzimmer_histo

I realize now that it was probably a mistake to publish this piece on this SOTU/Epstein-dominated day…

But if you can stomach it: I am “celebrating” the tenth anniversary of National Review’s “Against Trump” with a deep dives into the history and political identity of Modern Conservatism:

This came up a bit over the past week in conversations online, but the way that fixating on short-term productivity in technical work SEEMS good but can actually harm us, is something I've been working on for years.

The fourth chapter of my book is on this paradox! *waits impatiently for release*

AI Added ‘Basically Zero’ to US Economic Growth Last Year, Goldman Sachs Says gizmodo.com/ai-added-basically 😂😂😂

So far AI has done more damage than adding any true value to productivty unless you consider the following as plus points:

* Getting staff fired
* Stealing journalist, book authors, or artists’ work
* Environment impact
* Hallucinations that caused harm and loss of life
* Creating undressing images of minors and woman
* The list list endless and you have to be psychopaths to like this

Saw a blogger I follow expounding on the value of AI to make everything he does easier and accelerate everything.

I reject the notion that things - anything - needs to be accelerated. That's a pernicious idea that's been created by the tech bros and capitalists to further enslave us.

Everyone needs to slow down. Productivity is a lie.
