What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I wish was a "pull" protocol instead of a "push" protocol. The way it works, whenever you take an action, it sends that action to all followers. I would prefer if it simply stored them and then let each follower pull them when they see fit.

That would introduce latency and more async comms as your messages wouldn't pop up into someone elses feed until their software fetch the data, but I think it would make it easier to self host.

@soapdog There's a poll-based version specced at fediverse.codeberg.page/fep/fe, sadly with no notable implementations (wouldn't be interactable by Mastodon etc.), but it's an opportunity to break new ground as an implementer if you know anyone who'd like to experiment with it.

Proton is generally regarded as a secure email service and this might be true regarding encryption and data storage. But now Proton has collaborated with the FBI and handed over payment data to identify the owner of an email account.

And guess what … The owner of the account was not a paedophile or a terrorist, it was an activists connected to the protest movement „Stop Cop City“

Of course, Proton acted accordingly to Swiss law but considering that this not a single case and Proton is always promoting their location in Switzerland as trustworthy, I would recommend to use something else, probably not even email.

But if you’re using it, follow some basic rules:

1. No recovery data like email or phone numbers.

2. Use a VPN (keep in mind that the VPN provider knows who you are and that a VPN might not be as secure as you think)

3. Don’t use banking accounts for payment. If possible, use Monero or Cash.

4. Don’t use your secret email for anything else. The more often you use it, the more traces you leave.

5. Consider using a messenger for sensitive communication. My personal recommendation is Molly.

@TutanotaTuta How often per year do you get these requests from authorities and how often do you follow them?

I deactivated Google Play on my phone. The electricity company app was the first to be bricked. 'You must update.'

I wrote to them: ’I don’t have Google or Apple. Where else can I update the app?’ Nowhere else, they replied.

I wrote (politely) back: ’I can’t use your app any more then. It’s an odd requirement to make of your customers. A Norlys customer can only access all Norlys services if they are also a customer of one of two specific private for-profit US companies.’

Phone screenshot. A wall of white. A cartoon of a worker in overalls with various tools by a ladder. Below that (my translation from Danish) 'You must update the app. We require you to update the app so that we can give you a good app experience.' At the bottom, a purple button 'Get update'. But if you press it, it only links to Google Play, which I have deactivated, so I can't update.

I’ve found myself feeling unmoored by the current crop of FOSS contributions. I genuinely don’t know how to proceed.

Of course there’s the slop where the PR checklist gets deleted & almost all items violated. The truly annoying part about this is that I always try to be kind & not a stickler about policies. I guess I don’t owe kindness to a bot, but it’s a bad look to be assertive in public. (1/5)

parkerortolani.blog/2026/03/07
