문득 그들이 조금 불쌍하다 느껴졌다.
그래서 그런가, 그때 자신의 주장을 굽히지 않았던 동기들은 얼굴도, 이름도 기억나지 않는다. 심지어 그가 원하던 세부전공을 갔는지도 모르겠다. 내 동기들의 8할은 역사학을 선택하고 싶어했고, 그들도 마찬가지였다. 역사학은 적게나마 사범대 교직이수가 가능한 세부전공이었기 때문이다. 그들은 자신이 원한 세부전공을 갔을까? 그리고 교직이수를 해냈을까? 모르겠다. 사람 잘못되기를 바라고 싶은 마음은 없으니 그들이 원하는 대로 되었기를 바랄 뿐이다. 다만, 그들은 내가 느꼈던 학문의 연쇄적 반응을 경험할 기회가 없었으리라 생각하니
세부전공으로 역사학을 희망했던 내가 들었던 고고학 입문과 서양 윤리학은 고대 서구문명의 토대를 이해하는데 큰 도움이 되었다. 한 시대를 살았던 사람들의 생활과 그 생활을 바탕으로 한 생각을 이해하지 못하면 결국 그들이 만들어낸 역사도 이해할 수 없었던 것이다. 당연히 지금 와서는 그때의 선택에 의문도 후회도 없다. 학문에서 필요없는 것은 없다. 모든건 유기적으로 연결되어있고, 결국 도움이 된다. 내가 어떤 전공을 선택하고, 사회로 나와 어떤 직업을 선택하든지 말이다.
극히 일부는 마지막까지 정정하지 않았다. 그건 자기 권리고, 나는 이 전공을 들을건데 왜 내 전공에 도움도 안되는 강의로 학점을 낭비해야하느냐? 라고 말하면서 말이다. 신입생 환영회 때 동기들한테 자랑스럽게 자신의 생각을 말하던 그들을 보면서 한편으로는 내가 손해를 본것인가? 하는 의문이 들었다. 그런데, 막상 수업을 들어보니까 그렇지 않더라. 서로 다른 전공이라고 했지만, 모두 기초가 되는 수업이라 그 뒤에 어떤 세부전공을 골라도 도움이 되도록 유기적으로 연결되어있었다.
대학교 첫 수강신청 때, 조교님들이 신입생 커리큘럼을 안내해주었다. 전공필수, 교양필수, 전공선택, 교양선택 등등. 학부생으로 입학했던 탓에 학부 안에 들어있던 서로 다른 세부전공의 전공 과목들이 골고루 들어갔는데, 동기 중 몇몇은 그 커리큘럼을 따라가지 않고 자기가 가고싶은 세부전공의 과목들로 시간표를 임의 편성했다. 이게 한 2주 정도 지나고 나서 문제가 되었는데, 이렇게 커리큘럼을 짠건 수강인원의 편중을 막기 위함도 있었기 때문이었다. 그때 임의로 편성했던 동기들 대부분은 수강정정기간에 정정했지만,

is truly private unless it hasn't trained on nonconsensual data.
Even if a platform were able to
create the perfect protections for its users' prompts and results,
If the platform is built from or utilizing an AI model that was trained on or is updated and optimized with data that was scraped from millions of people without their consent, then of course this platform isn't "privacy-respectful."
How could it be?
The company is saying:
"We respect the privacy of our users while they are using our platform, but outside of it, it's fair game."
Users thinking they are using a privacy-respectful platform are in fact saying:
"Privacy for me and not for thee,"
And are directly contributing to the platform needing to scrape even more nonconsensual data to improve.
Always ask: Where the training data comes from?
Without the assurance that a platform only uses AI models that have only been training on data acquired ethically, it is not a privacy-respectful platform.

The tech industry has extreme difficulty integrating information that doesn't have its source in an overtly rationalist process. In practice, this means that we tend to think that if you can't give a logical chain of deductions that proves that something is the case, your information is worthless. The issue with this is that day-to-day, in the tech world and outside of it, the vast bulk of the information we use to make decisions isn't this kind of information.

<rant>People like to tell me that the purpose of science fiction isn't to prognosticate. I always find this a bit strange.
Once someone has published some science fiction you're free to do whatever you like with it (modulo whatever copyright laws you respect). Regardless of whether an author says they were prognosticating you're free to look at how good they were at prognosticating.
Why would you do this?
1. It's fun
2. It's a great seed for conversation about an author
3. Sometimes authors are modest and say they weren't prognosticating when actually they were and they were really good at it
4. When thinking about the state of the world it's good to compare with ways the world could have been. That's a common way for humans to reason. Authorial intent is irrelevant here. Scavenge whatever tools for thought you can from wherever.
