Two young men from the village of Kinakatem (Sepik Province) present their interpretation of drawings of plant material conserved in the Oceania Collection of the Dahlem Museum of Berlin (Germany). According to them, these paintings are representations of designs produced by application of the underside of a fern frond (vuvreng), which deposits its white colored spores onto skin.

To mark reindeer in Swedish Lapland, the Sami hold a roundup on the summer pastures, by foot, bike, or helicopter, to gather the animals which are shared by a group of herders. Females and their young run in circles while ranchers try to find a young reindeer that is following a female that belongs to them, to catch it and mark its ear. The poles fitted with a metal loop at the end are a recent innovation that replaces the traditional lasso.

Genocide

They killed a poem.
They killed a poem with tea-stained pages.
They killed a poem still bleeding when touched.
They killed a poem unfinished.
They killed one that's yet to be thought.
They killed a poem inside of a poem.
A poem knee-deep in its mother soil.
A poem still learning to live.
A poem trembling at the edge of the mouth.
A poem asleep inside the ink.
A poem silenced before its first breath.
They killed a poem inside of a poem.

The [Ophir] award for best film, as well as five other prizes, was given to “Hayam”, a film about a 12-year-old Palestinian boy from the occupied West Bank who wants to travel to Tel Aviv to see the sea for the first time.

Winning best film means it will now automatically become Israel’s entry for the Academy Awards in the international film category next year.

A Batek woman walks in the forest of Taman Negara National Park in search of useful materials. The Batek are hunter-gatherers whose knowledge of the forest landscape is based on familiarity with a complex network of trails and topographic features. This knowledge is transmitted through long practice in walking, gathering, and moving from one place to another.

After the carefully maintained temple site was abandoned in the twelfth century, forest developed on the site, with a remarkable cover of mosses (120 species) carpeting the forest floor. Currently, this forest is particularly revered, as are, in other contexts, sacred forests from tropical regions that can constitute reserves in areas where the original forests have almost disappeared.

The rainforest is a very special classroom for both and local people. Field studies involving researchers and villagers allow the comparison of local knowledge and scientific knowledge, as here in the measurement of DBH (diameter at breast height), a standard measure of tree trunks, carried out by a villager and a biologist from the University of Yaoundé.

The Purépecha use common tule, or hardstem bulrush, from Lake Pátzcuaro (Michoacán) to weave all sorts of traditional objects such as panniers, baskets, mats, and hats. These items, which serve the needs of daily life, are also some of the crafts sought after by tourists. They are sold at major festivals that bring together the wares from the entire region, as here in the zócalo (central square) of Uruapán.

In the Wildlife Sanctuary of Rema-Kalenga, Tripura men prepare bamboo harvested from the surrounding forests. Often called “the poor man's timber”, bamboo plays a major role in regional markets. Bouquets of wheat are presented at a seed exchange market. While agricultural modernization has successfully encouraged the cultivation of improved varieties produced by seed companies, some farmers seek to revive the management of old varieties. They came together in 2003 in the network "Semences paysannes" ("farmers’ seeds”).

In one day, all these cacao pods have to be opened, both to protect the crop from thieves and to permit the seeds to dry. This is why a cacao field owner sought help from many people from his village and nearby villages, whether they are from his ethnic group or not. Children also help, but mostly in the preparation of cacao juice. When the work is over, the owner will provide everyone with a meal.

An olive stall in the main market of Meknes. The very low diversity in varieties of olives in Morocco (the Moroccan Picholine is the dominant clone) is offset here by the wide variety of modes of preparation. Similarly, a large variety of olive oil types are found in Morocco, which differ principally in their modes of preparation and areas of origin, rather than in their varietal diversity.

Despite access to modern medicine, some maladies remain in the domain of traditional healers. This itinerant shaman cares for a three-year-old child who is still not able to walk. His offerings are a bowl of sticky rice, cups of rice wine, incense sticks and ceremonial money. Trance, prayers to the ancestors of the parents, and incantations to guardian spirits follow. Then, the shaman will make the child drink a decoction of medicinal plants

The 5,000 Dolgans of Taimyr in represent a northern branch of the Turkish language family. The nomadic life of these reindeer herders in the Arctic tundra is governed by the seasonal migration of the reindeer. In 1993, an anthropological team collected blood samples from various ethnic groups living in Siberia. The samples were then tested at the Pasteur Institute for the presence of retrovirus markers of population migration.

The cairn next to them marks out the path for yak herds moving to summer pastures. It also alerts passers-by to the dangerousness of the promontory and is a deferential testimony of humans to the spirits of the place.

Who can stop Israel’s genocide in Gaza?

An independent United Nations commission says Israel has committed genocide in Gaza.

Mass killing and injuries, destruction of infrastructure and the creation of unliveable conditions are all part of the acts that make up the crime.

And Israeli ministers have clearly demonstrated their intent through their statements, says the report.
