What is Hackers' Pub?

Hackers' Pub is a place for software engineers to share their knowledge and experience with each other. It's also an ActivityPub-enabled social network, so you can follow your favorite hackers in the fediverse and get their latest posts in your feed.

I just read The Colonization of Confidence by @WeirdWriterRobert Kingett and you should too.
I've talked about hating the tools that subvert cognition and creativity. This piece puts into words those concepts by telling you a story. It's raw. It's messy and emotional. It's human. It's something LLMs could never do and it's beautiful. sightlessscribbles.com/the-col

There are many things I hate about the Internet now but one of them is that you register a domain at one price and then once you're doing something with the domain and so depending on continued access the price goes up and up and up every single year

@mcc I remember domain names being something cheap enough that I could buy them on a whim as a high schooler and as broke college student, and now... now I don't want to think about how much they cost. I just sort of gently disassociate when I hit that renew button.

I wonder if having domain names for your websites is getting to be an old people thing now.

Interesting. Could X lose the Twitter trademark?

"A Virginia startup calling itself “Operation Bluebird” announced this week that it has filed a formal petition with the US Patent and Trademark Office, asking the federal agency to cancel X Corporation’s trademarks of the words “Twitter” and “tweet” since X has allegedly abandoned them."

Current Toronto weather status: this is some bullshit for December 10th. Our roads aren't supposed to be full of slush and snow until Christmas, or better yet January.

I suppose it is kind of scenic on places other than the roads, but still.

(Making an extra stocking up stop at Fiesta Farms on Monday suddenly seems like a good choice instead of unnecessary caution. I only go by on bike and I'm certainly not bike commuting in this cold mess.)

Well, it would be a great way to promote the .

👉🏾 Tourists to US would have to reveal five years of social media activity under new plan theguardian.com/us-news/2025/d

Immigration Agent (IA): What is this‽

Darnell Clayton (DC): These are my handles.

IA: Huh‽

DC: This is my account, & as you can see I can follow people from , @zuckMark Zuckerberg from , my news sites & even this random comedian.

IA: Wait, what‽ A federal verse‽

DC: 😂

I just ran an experiment about web page rendering.

I have a status page that includes a table of 200 items pulled from the database

Option A: streaming HTML that is generated on the fly

Option B: Load the shell and leverage and Server-Sent Events to populate the table and related data.

Lighthouse reports that the SSE version renders in half the time as the streamed HTML.

@TheOneSwit @clarablackink @NiwlCraftHonora NiwlCraft

is about building communities that distribute tasks on a eye-to-eye level.

communities don't need to be self-sufficient, medieval, agricultural, backwater villages. But one of the main questions in solarpunk is: What can a community achieve without the need for a highly specialized, expert driven economy?

Cars and advanced electronics are a gray area. The hyperscaler computer infrastructure needed for is definitely out of bounds.

@alexanderondu I absolutely love the vibes of solarpunk, but there is no such thing as any sort of electronics (or even much in the way of metal forging!) if the criteria is “tasks distributed on an eye-to-eye level”. The most basic village blacksmith of 1,000 years ago relied on a network of supply sourcing from hundreds of miles away, and even the most basic electronics of the early 1900s relied on continent-spanning supply chains.

Who knew a font could be woke? U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has asked diplomats to ditch Calibri and return to using Times New Roman in official communications. The State Department adopted Calibri in 2023 because it's considered a more accessible font for people with disabilities. A cable sent to diplomats yesterday read: “To restore decorum and professionalism to the Department’s written work products and abolish yet another wasteful DEIA program, the Department is returning to Times New Roman as its standard typeface." Here's more from @huffingtonpostHuffPost.

The Danish government is using the upcoming Christmas break to slip through a public consultation for a draft law that would make it an OFFENCE to use a to access content that would otherwise not be available in Denmark, or to circumvent the blocking of "illegal" websites. hoeringsportalen.dk/Hearing/De

This is done under the guise of ensuring a technologically neutral implementation of Directive 98/84 on pay-TV decoders (hint: the IP address is NOT a conditional access device).

English translation of the highlighted part:

The term ‘other technical solution’ should be understood broadly. The broad wording is intended to ensure that the proposed amendment covers any technical solution used to provide unauthorised access to media content.
[..]
For example, it will also be prohibited to use VPN connections to access media content that would otherwise not be available in Denmark, or to circumvent the blocking of illegal websites.
