Finally got around to updating my router (new hardware) pairing it together with an AP, funnelling everything through a separate zero running

Bonus: my Raspberry Pi 400 is now setup with OpenBSD's httpd / relayd - ready to host all of my web projects locally!

That was sure a lot of buzz words...I'll gather my detailed thoughts and breakdown everything into a blog post soon 😄

So I've been using Fastmail with my own domain name for several years now. Fastmail is excellent - simply the best e-mail service I know, but it's also a bit on the pricey side, and I'm not sure if this is worth it any longer for my usage.

Many years back my e-mail was mostly personal correspondence with friends. Nowadays it's just bills, confirmations, notifications and newsletters. These things (well, some of them) need to work reliably, too, but I just don't feel "invested" in e-mail any more and think about switching to a simpler and more affordable service, most likely Posteo.

How has your use of e-mail changed over the years?

Since the last article, the secmodel_jail / jailctl / jailmgr stack has moved closer to a coherent whole. The original guardrails remain unchanged: no modifications to existing kernel paths, no UVM hooks, no NPF integration, no hidden coupling. The scope stays explicit and the risk bounded.

Progress has focused on operations. Logging, lightweight supervision, and basic metrics are in place, shifting the question from "can this work?" to "can this be run?". Networking remains intentionally simple and host-based; for hard isolation, Xen is still the right boundary. Jails provide an operational frame inside the host, not a replacement for virtualization.

Resource budgeting is being prototyped again via the secmodel evaluation interface, touching allocation paths and scheduler run queues in a minimally invasive way, but it needs careful review.

There is now also a small landing page to make the ideas visible, including an experimental amd64 ISO based on NetBSD 10.1 for testing. If it sparks upstream interest or discussion around lightweight, explicit isolation on NetBSD, that is already a win.

Small follow-up on Jails for NetBSD.

While experimenting with resource budgeting via the secmodel evaluation interface, it became clear that pushing resource limits into the jail mechanism introduces complexity in sensitive kernel paths and risks undermining system stability. That runs counter to one of the core guardrails of the project: keep the mechanism simple, explicit, and low-risk.

As a result, resource control is now considered out of scope for Jails for NetBSD.

Jails remain focused on lightweight service isolation and operational structure inside the host. Systems that require hard resource guarantees should use virtualization boundaries such as Xen.

This keeps the design aligned with its original goal: pragmatic, minimally invasive process isolation on NetBSD.

A short write-up explaining this scope refinement will be published on the project website later this week.

The unobtainium piece of the Seequa collection has arrived, and wow is it smaller than I imagined! The Tabor 3.25” drivette for these little disks were designed in a collaborative effort between Dysan Corporation from California, Tabor Corporation from Massachusetts, and Seequa Computer Corporation from Maryland. These rigid plastic disks could hold 500K on a single disk, and were to be the new “golden standard” of format for any luggable IBM compatible.

I will have my 3.25” disk, my NOS Drivette, and the Tabor edge adapter on display alongside my Seequa research at VCF East and VCF Midwest!

Whole red lentils (masoor dal, with the skin on) pressure cooked with salt, turmeric, and whole cloves of garlic, and tempered with black mustard, dried red chillies, and thin sticks of sliced ginger, finished off with a bit of ghee and chopped coriander (neither visible due to inadvisable pre-photo vigorous stirring).

Call to action to cis people: be assholes anytime you get asked for your sex assigned at birth. Write letters, complain to staff, refuse to answer. Make it impossible to collect sex assigned at birth. Be really offended that anyone would ask you. Make enough noise that if trans people want to quietly not answer or give whatever answer feels correct to them, no one will notice.

US troops get briefed by their officers:

“President Trump has been anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth“

All other, varying causes given for the war are less convincing than this. I mean, who can oppose bringing Jesus back, really?

This is Doctor Strangelove stuff. 😒

:blobhyperthink:

/ technologies are an existential threat to well before we even get anywhere near and the singularity.

The sheer scale of deployment and integration in all the nooks and crannies of society, where we give it access to all our information, and now with the Rise of the Agents, let AI act on them too. Giving full control away from us..

.. to the owners of this technology, the usual suspects, and their billionaire class. Folks who are clearly out to dominate us, and keep us in check so they can continue their fancy lifestyles wallowing in decadence and moral depravity.

🤖 Unrestrained AI is the tech for 🧛 unrestrained elites.

Think about the last architectural decision your team made.

Was it actually decided through careful analysis? Or did the person who cared the most and spoke the loudest end up steering the outcome?

14 episodes into our Stories on Facilitating Software Architecture & Design series with @roundcrisisroundcrisis (a.k.a Andrea ) 😹 🦙 and @ahlAndrew Harmel-Law, and one pattern keeps surfacing: the biggest threat to good architecture isn't a lack of technical knowledge. It's the human dynamics we don't address.
